Movie Reviews of IvanhoeMovie Review: Sister Acts Summary: 4 Stars
Earlier this year I was able to watch "The Adventures of Robin Hood" for the first time. I had heard that it was considered something of a classic for its' time but, frankly, I thought it was a bit much and rather over-rated. I mention this because it was the first movie that came to mind after I watched "Ivanhoe" the other night. They are quite similar in a number of ways, not the least of which is to tell the story of the efforts to bring King Richard the Lion-Hearted back to his throne. Needless to say, the ultimate bad guy in both films was King John. The local bad guys, the damsels in distress, the martial competitions, etc. give a sense that the same story is told with different actors portraying different characters.
I felt "Ivanhoe" did the better job. The jousting events were better staged and more interesting that Robin Hood's famous archery match. I do have to acknowledge that I saw a lot of old men in "Ivanhoe" appearing to fence with younger men at no apparent disadvantage. The story of King Richard was better developed although it appears that Ivanhoe must have been able to FedEx the ransom money so that the King could arrive just in time. The aspect of Rebecca and her father in "Ivanhoe" was unique for its' time. Rebecca, played beautifully by Elizabeth Taylor, is the daughter of a Jewish leader and their issues were dealt with rather realistically. All in all, I found myself more attentive to "Ivanhoe" than I ever was to "The Adventures of Robin Hood". Finally, I couldn't help but note that Olivia de Havilland was the leading lady to Robin Hood and Joan Fontaine was a leading lady to Ivanhoe. I understand that they are actually sisters in real life and quite competative professionally. I'd said Joan got the edge in this matchup.
Movie Review: Sunny Ivanhoe Summary: 4 Stars
This is a retelling of Sir Walter Scott's epic of chivalry and knighthood. A lot depends on how you approach this and similar epics (e.g. Knights of the Round Table) from the Golden Age of Hollywood. 'Golden' is a suitable description of these epics because the colours are so brilliant and everything even the peasant's huts appear clean! The whole approach of directors like Thorpe and Michael Curtiz and the studios involved is to make the stories visually stunning and almost fairy tale like. Contrast this with the more graphic realism of Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' or John Boorman's 'Excalibur'. The point being that for some audiences used to this more modern approach 'Ivanhoe' and other films from this period may seem artificial and tame but if your desire is to sit and watch a colourful, swash buckling movie with younger members of your family without worrying about unsuitable gore or sexual content then this is your kind of movie. Both Taylors are matinee idol gorgeous, George Sanders is suitably malevolent and supporting actors like Finlay Currie keep the standard high. Great fun!!
Movie Review: Terrific Entertainment Summary: 4 Stars
This is the type of Hollywood entertainment they just don't make anymore. While watching the scene of Robin Hood's men assaulting the villain's castle, it seemed like thousands of arrows were being shot. Since this was filmed 40 years before CGI, those were real arrows or movie replicas of them. Today someone can create thousands or millions of arrows after spending a few minutes at the computer. This film was the real deal and the assault scene was great.
Robert Taylor was properly gallant as Ivanhoe and Joan Fontaine much more attractive than I remember her as Roweena. However I think many of us have forgotten just how gorgeous the young Elizabth Taylor was. Those violet eyes and the beautiful curves of her body: no wonder the villainous knight, well-played by George Sanders, went bananas over her.
Not too many extras of the dvd unfortunately, but this is what one comes to expect of these Warner Bros. releases of classic MGM films.
Still this film is tremendously enjoyable and a wonderful evening's entertainment.
Movie Review: True to the book! Summary: 4 Stars
And enjoyable film about a violent era. I first saw Ivanhoe as a teenager - not long after having read the book as a mandatory assignment in English class. The passage of more than five decades has not changed my opinion of Ivanhoe. The film is a well made classic. Anyone who reads the book feels that Ivanhoe should have squired and loved faithful, selfless Rebecca. The same holds true for the film. But these were the Middle Ages, the time of Christian fervor when Crusaders marched off to drive infidels out of the Holy Land, and Jews were lesser people in England's social structure. So, staying true to his class, noble Ivanhoe forsakes Rebecca (played by young and stunningly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor) and returns to Rowena. One can assume that that's the way it would've been in Medieval England. But had I been in Ivanhoe's shoes, I might've said "Convention be damned!"
