Movie Reviews of Italian Americans and Federal HillMovie Review: stories that speak to all Italian Americans Summary: 5 Stars
I've never seen anything quite like this moving documentary about the Italian Americans of Federal Hill.
The stories told by each interviewee were touching and familiar as I too experienced so much of the same..either personally or from my own parents shared memories.
And the food...all of us can relate to the connection with all the wonderful food....Love of family and food go hand and hand....that "bond" deep and fundamental...( the seven fishes history/stories are great!)
This film brings it all together.
Background music is perfectly introduced and added is the benefit of viewing the musicians themselves as they play.
This is a must see for all Italian Americans.
( great gift idea for the older set..)
Summary of Italian Americans and Federal HillITALIAN AMERICANS AND FEDERAL HILL is a four star documentary film by Producer/Director Jon Raben. Providence, Rhode Island's
"Little Italy," is one of America's most storied neighborhoods. Relive the traditions and challenges of Italian Americans whose ancestors immigrated for a better future. Once a bustling Italian enclave of cold-water flats and peddlers, Federal Hill now features upscale restaurants and markets known throughout the world. For immigrants challenged by poverty, the language barrier and discrimination, hard work and education became the path to a better
life. Today, Italian Americans from Federal Hill are among the mainstream and elite of society.
Italian Americans and Federal Hill produced and directed by Jon Raben, features personalities including three former Providence mayors, a Rhode Island lieutenant governor and a Providence City Council president. Also included are an historian, a judge and a U.S. ambassador, as well as priests, artisans, entrepreneurs and other Italian Americans from Federal Hill.
Attacking stereotypes, this moving and lively depiction of the Italian American experience was filmed on location in historic Federal Hill. The soundtrack features traditional Italian folk and classical music recorded live.

"A REMARKABLE DOCUMENTARY"
-Frances Syner,The Federal Hill Gazette
[Raben's] "patient, sympathetic, but deliberate style seems to coax revealing, personal anecdotes and details from his subjects that would have been lost to a less careful approach. It almost seems that the subject and the chronicler were
somehow meant to find each other."
-Jeff Kos, The Federal Hill Gazette
