Movie Review: The Average American Girl

It Should Happen to You is the story of a wannabe model named Gladys Glover (Judy Holliday) who is sick of her career going nowhere. She takes matters into her own hands after a pep talk from Pete Sheppard (Jack Lemmon) and rents a billboard on Columbus Avenue. She uses it to publicize herself putting just her name in giant letters. Nothing seems to happen, except she is asked to sell the billboard to a large company. Evan Adams the third (Peter Lawford) attempts to wine and dine Gladys into selling. She finally agrees, but only when she recieves eight more billboards to replace the one she loses. This step makes her an overnight celebrity, and when an agent meets her, gives her a reason to be famous. She is marketed as the everywoman and begins endorsing everything from soap to weight loss pills.
Unfortunately, the plot sounds more interesting than it actually is. Gladys really is the everywoman, so we see her doing mundane things like going shopping and walking in the park. There is a love story between her and Pete, but it takes a backseat to her new career.
Holliday is the bright spot of this film. She is funny and entertaining in all that she does. Her best scene is that opposite Lawford who attempts to seduce her. Her reactions to his romancing is hilarious and wonderful, even though this sort of situation has been done a million times before in the movies. Her personality makes the film enjoyable, even if it isn't the kind of thing you'll want to watch over and over again.
Summary of It Should Happen to You
All Gladys Glover wants is to make a name for herself in New York--which explains the giant billboard with her name plastered across it. Celebrity, of course, follows. It Should Happen to You proves that the concept of "being famous for being famous" did not arrive with Angelyne or Paris Hilton. This comedy was designed for the dumb-blonde talents of the expert Judy Holliday, re-uniting with Born Yesterday writer Garson Kanin and director George Cukor. She's in prime form, and some of her scenes with Jack Lemmon (his film debut) have a spritzy give-and-take. (Alas, his character, a documentary filmmaker, is a bit of a nag.) The media satire is a little dated, from a 21st-century perspective, and a subplot with soap magnate Peter Lawford doesn't wash. The pleasures are in Cukor's airy Manhattan location shots and Holliday's offbeat line readings, her lasting gift from a brief career. --Robert HortonComedy DVD Video
