Movie Review: 360 Degrees of Praise and Worship Rolling Toward You!

Some fifty years ago, all students in my high school in West Africa were introduced to the politics of apartheid and the music of South Africa by the principal, Reverend D. T. Matabese, himself a South African. I am among those who believe that pain forces oppressed peoples to introspect and emerge to counter with extraordinary creativity: South Africans have the best musical voices in the whole of Africa! Holding the concert recorded live on this DVD under an open Cape Town sky on a winter night, Israel & the New Breed matched the musicianship, vitality, praise and worship all around them!
Over a year ago, I bought the CD Alive in South Africa of the same concert filmed on this amazing DVD so I had heard all the songs before but watching the live performance is a lot more fulfilling than merely listening to it. For 150 minutes of Praise and Worship, (including some bonus songs), this DVD is a steal for less than $13 and cheaper than the 2-disc CD set!
The crowd was ecstatic throughout and you get the feeling you were right there with them. All hands waving, some eyes closed, tears running down faces and many jumping for joy, the 8000-strong crowd was entranced by the awesome live show! A particularly vigorous performance by the tireless multitalented band leader, Israel, proved that God knows his name with the acclaimed, reggae-like selection "Not Forgotten" which won a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association for Best Contemporary Gospel in 2006.
Let me spoil one of the surprises: among a few guest artists, Minister Jonathan Butler made a cameo appearance at the end of the show and yes, the maestro guitarist's catchy, Soweto-style rendition of "Come and Let us Sing" galvanized the band and frenzied the crowd. Even if my CD set had not been `irresistibly' swiped by a `friend,' I would still have purchased this DVD. Treat yourself to pure spiritual joy - run, don't walk, to buy this energetic performance on DVD and invite the choir at your church to "experience the manifest presence of God."
