Movie Reviews of Iris

Movie Review: Ode to Iris Murdoch
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie is based on the reminiscenses of John Bayley, the husband of Iris Murdoch, an English novelist and philosopher. Scenes of the early part of their courtship and love affair are juxtaposed with her later descent into madness, as her husband ministers to her growing needs. The performances of Judith Densch and Ben Broadbent are nothing short of remarkable and catch the roller-coaster existence of these two literary giants with wonderful clarity. For sensitive viewers, be forewarned, the subject matter is depressing and is certainly not light entertainment.

Movie Review: Well done and sad
Summary: 4 Stars

It's terrifically well done with perfect casting. I only wish there had been even more of the brilliant Iris, before her decline into Alzheimer's. She was amazingly, spectacularly brilliant, as well as eccentric (shall we say) in love and one of the greatest English novelists. The movie follows her husband, John Bayley's memoirs of her, their deep love and his devotion during her illness. Very moving.

Movie Review: Iris
Summary: 4 Stars

A beautifully written and acted movie about the devastation of Alzheimers. Judi Dench as the older Iris is fantastic and Kate Winslet as the young Iris is very good. This was my first introduction the the actor Jim Broadbent and I found him to be marvelous...so glad to know that he won an Academy Award for this role. Not a movie to pick up your spirits but a treasure just the same.

Movie Review: RICHARD EYRE, OPUS 4
Summary: 4 Stars

***1/2 2001. Adapted from John Bayley's Elegy for Iris, IRIS was co-written and directed by Richard Eyre. 2002 Academy award in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category for Jim Broadbent and two other nominations. Good biopic about Iris Murdoch's fight against Alzheimer's disease.
