Movie Reviews of InvincibleMovie Review: One of the Year's Best Summary: 5 Stars
I noticed most of the bad reviews of this film consist of bashing Mark Walburg for being...well, Mark Walburg. They don't seem to focus on the fact that the story is an inspiring true story of a down on his luck working Joe, who is given an opportunity to achive his dream. How many movies are made like this in Hollywood today? Practically zero.
How is the acting? It is not the greatest I'll admit, but the story, directing, classic rock soundtrack, and cinematography more than make up for it. And the football action is awesome as well. And there is nothing offensive in the film.
This story of Vince Papale is one inspiring film and deserves to be seen by everyone. I've heard everyone compare this film to Remember the Titans. I can't do that because they are two completly different films with different feels to them. Invincible truely capture the rough times of the Ford and Carter Administrations and their failures in the economy, and the hopelessness so many felt, and an average Joe coming to inspire people. For my money, you just don't get better movies than that. Only United 93 was better this year.
Movie Review: In-Vince-a-Bull Summary: 5 Stars
Great uplifting story like the Bible's tale of Job about a guy who seems to have lost in all in hard economic times (that I lived through as well) and comes back to win it all--a starting spot in the Philadelphia Eagles.
The story line was great, the characters well developed. Vince Papale bulls his way through obstacles with stubborn tenacity--makes a name for himself, gets his life together, and the boy gets the girl. I don't know all the details, but he did in real life marry a lovely blond named Janet, so I think that part of the movie was accurate also. It really seems like a fairy tale story come to life.
My only regret is there was not enough about his play as a football player. I won't tell you the ending, but it is enough to make a football player smile.
One final note. I thought the sound track and film work were excellent. It is a DVD you will want to keep and watch again, unlike so many produced these days that you can only watch once. Worth a spot in your DVD collection. And a great gift idea for your football player friends.
Movie Review: Rocky in the NFL Summary: 5 Stars
In 1975 the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team was on a 14-year losing streak. They had no heart and they had disappointed a city that needed them. Then a down-on-his-luck 30 year old out of work substitute teacher in Philadelphia, played by Mark Wahlberg, is abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a part-time bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976.
This open call was an act of desperation by a new coach and is what this film is about. This inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale who gave his heart and soul to the team and brought them back to life. He will never be forgotten in Philly, he may not be in the record books, but every Eagles football fan knows him. Vince Papale was making all this happen at the same time the fictional movie "Rocky" was released...so the fans of the Eagles saw that dreams do come true. A lesson we should all remember. I recommend this film for the whole family.
Movie Review: Better than the usual sports saga Summary: 5 Stars
"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: Rocky meets Rudy -- Indeed! Summary: 5 Stars
This true story, with appropriate embellishments, is inspiring, visually wonderful and still manages to give a sense of the "up from nothing so we all have to stick together" feeling of the title character's background. Wahlberg fits the bill to a T in this flick and his acting chops have improved wonderfully in the past few years, a great job, although I think the fact that the character wasn't much of a stretch was part of it. An out of work teacher gets a shot in the NFL, and makes it -- even if only on special teams -- a rousing true to life story with a very well worked screen play that added enough elements to make it a great movie without completely diluting the actual events and story. The DVD extras include a great documentary on the making of the movie and Papale's actual career. Highly recommended for any football fan, or fan of "little guy reaches impossible dream" stories.
