Movie Reviews of InvincibleMovie Review: The Kind of Movie Disney Used to Make. Summary: 5 Stars
Just a week before the 2006 NFL season began, I thought this might be a good mood-setting movie. Though I wasn't too sure Mark Walberg was a good fit for this role, I must say, INVINCIBLE greatly exceeded my expectations. This is the best movie Disney has put out in a long time.
This is the true story of Vince Papale, who played three years for the Philadelphia Eagles. When coach Dick Vermiel took over the struggling Eagles in 1976, they were coming off a pathetic and disappointing season. Originally intended to rally fan support, Vermeil held open tryouts for the team. No one held realistic expectations that anything would come out of it, but up stepped Vince Papale, an out of work school teacher and part time bartender. This movie accurately tells Papale's story and perpetuates the "never say can't" story that professional sports so often provides the backdrop for. Add this to such stories as Rudy, The Rookie, Sea Biscuit, and even a fictional story also based in Philadelphia, Rocky, as another improbable story that overcame the impossible.
The movie is exceptionally well cast. Walberg holds his own as Papale and the surrounding cast of Philadelphia blue collar workers is perfect. Greg Kinnear superbly portrays Vermeil, though I really expected to see at least one scene of Vermeil crying in the locker room, which he is notorious for.
This is a feel good movie you shouldn't miss. One of the best movies of the year.
Movie Review: Great Story and Family Movie! Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished watching this movie with my wife and children (13 and 10) and we all really enjoyed this film!
I had heard Vince interviewed months before the movie came out and thought his story sounded amazing! His story is like a real life Rocky and I thought that everyone who made the movie did a fabulous job pulling it off!
They not only do a great job of telling the story but the football scenes show just how physical and violent the sport is. My son has been playing football for years and even at that level (Middle School) the physical punishment the players withstand is intense. I can't even imagine how insane it much be at the NFL level. Mark Wahlberg actually did the football scenes and took real hits in the movie, he didn't use a stunt double.
If you get the opportunity watch the bonus features where they tell the story of the making of the film that also has a lot of footage of Vince himself, it's as enjoyable as the film!
While some of the negative reviewers tried to write this film off, the fact of the matter is that this story really did happen, it's not some Disney invention.
It is both entertaining and inspiring and shows not only Vince's story but the intense passion Philidelphia fans have for their team. Just for the record, I'm not from Philidelphia and I'm a Tennessee Titans fan, but I can appreciate the passion that the Philly fans have for their team!
Movie Review: Fly Eagles Fly !!! Summary: 5 Stars
That was the one detail in this movie that really got on my nerves . They got the words to the Eagles fight song wrong! Okay on to the good stuff .This movie was not only for Vince Papale , it was also made for Dick Vermeil and all the Eagles fans. I was born in Philly and seeing old Vet stadium gives me goose bumps . All the parts with the Eagles fans being loud and obnoxious well ..... it`s true.If you wear a Cowboys jersey to an Eagles game I would recomend staying close to the security guards at all times. We are tough fans and even though it was ugly I am glad they showed like that. I have always belived Eagles fans are the best and the worst at the same time. We are die hard and passionate about our team and we love foot ball but we can sometimes be unforgiving ,rude and nasty. But thats what makes it fun to be an Eagles fan. I now live in Tampa Fla ands it`s just not the same . If you like foot ball movies this movie is for you . Some people have compared this movie to Rocky but don`t think so . You see this is a (true) story and it`s about football not boxing .Don`t get me wrong Rocky was great. On another note I found it ironic and funny that the one other player on the Eagle that was giving Papale the most grief the big mouth was jersey number 81 . Did any other Eagles fans catch that? This movie is also full of great 70s music .If you want to see a great feel good football movie this is it.
Movie Review: Wahlberg Scores Big Summary: 5 Stars
I never would have known that this was a Disney film. It had all the right ingredients: a down and out underdog, a down and out team, a down and out town, and sports. But Disney played this film with a simple, sweet understatement that gave it a loud voice that every athlete and coach should listen to.
Mark Wahlberg stars as Vince Papale, who at 30 years old attends an open tryout for the struggling Philly Eagles and actually ends up winning a spot. Coach Dick Vermeil takes a huge chance in giving Papale a spot on the roster, and by movie's end, he knows that it's paid off.
This is a feel-good film along the lines of Rudy, but with Papale being far less annoying than Rudy Ruettiger. Wahlberg portrays Papale with the quietest confidence, which is sometimes the best kind. He has moments of self doubt that he overcomes by resolving to do his best. That's an excellent lesson for anyone who is trying to pursue what may seem like an impossible dream.
Only when Papale literally lets go of the doubts others had about him, his ex-wife specifically, who wrote him a note calling him a loser, is he able to truly fufill the expectations he has for himself and those of his fans.
Wahlberg carries this movie to a dandy conclusion, and he is fantastic in it. Wahlberg is becoming the consummate actor.
