Movie Reviews of IntermezzoMovie Review: A Star Passed Over Summary: 5 Stars
I've read most of the reviews of this film, and agree with 18 of them (one fellow thinks it a deplorable film) - but I want to say a few words in praise of Leslie Howard. He gets passed over because this was Bergman's first starring role in an American film.
When I was a young girl (60 years ago!), late night TV was filled with old British movies. I found them so superior to most American films, and in some cases, still do today. This is where I first saw Leslie Howard in "Spitfire" with David Niven. I was smitten on the spot and am now trying to collect every film of his available.
He plays the wistful married lover in "Intermezzo" and no one could play it as he did. Just as no one could have played Ashley Wilkes as he did. Or played the doomed character in "Petrified Forest" with Humphrey Bogart. Bogart and Howard did "Petrified..." on stage and when they went to do the film, Bogart would have nothing for it unless they brought in Leslie Howard. There are few actors who could or can today speak the English language as beautifully as he did - who could emote with such quiet dignity and hold your attention with little to no dialogue and slight body language as he did. Any film he made was better because of the quality he brought and everyone else in the film was the better for it. Bergman was good, but having Leslie Howard play her lover didn't hurt.
Howard was much the same man in private as he appeared on film. He was enormously patriotic and died in 1943 when a single German fighter brought down his plane when on a secret mission for the English, flying from America to Great Britain. They believe the Germans thought Churchill was on that flight. In real life, Howard was quite the lover and a true romantic. As an actor, he could play comedy as easily as drama. If you haven't seen Leslie Howard before, watch "Of Human Bondage", "Pygmalion" and definitely "Spitfire". The latter is a true story of the man who designed the Spitfire plane that saved England in WW 2 and how it cost him his life.
Obviously, I love "Intermezzo" and recommend it highly to anyone who wants to see two young artists - one reaching for her peak and the other helping her get there.
(Addendum 5/23/2010- There is a comment on my review that says this film is not available. Not so. Out on DVD!)
Summary of Intermezzo"Eloquent, sensitive, poignant" (The New York Times), this romantic and heartbreaking film has an "absorbing power" (Los Angeles Times). Legendary OscarĀ(r) winner* Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca), in her first English-speaking role, and Leslie Howard (Gone With the Wind) star in this "well-acted, expertly written" (Motion Picture Herald) tale that proves that music is indeed the food of love. Renowned violinist Holger Brandt (Howard) is delighted to be back with his family after a long tour. But when he meets his daughter's piano teacher, Anita (Bergman), and hears her play, he is captivated. Despite the devastating toll on his family, Holger and Anita begin a musical partnership that quickly becomes a passionate romance. But are they meant to live in harmony forever or is this merely an intermezzo? *1956: Actress, Anastasia, 1944: Actress, Gaslight; 1974: Supporting Actress, Murder on the Orient Express
