Movie Review: ZZZzzz...
Summary: 2 Stars

When famous West End actress Anna (Ingrid Bergman) meets married diplomat Phillip (Cary Grant), sparks fly and the two begin a torrid love affair. Much later, Anna learns something about Phillip that puts their relationship in jeop

I love Bergman and Grant, but here they're stuck with a sily and dated script and the result is an epically boring movie; in fact, if it weren't for the gorgeous Christian Dior ball gowns, I wouldn't like anything about it. Cary seems to be doing an impersonation of himself, sleepwalking through his cliché mannerisms and speeches. He never seems sincere and keeps his costar at an emotional distance (but it is fun to see him dance a jig). Ingrid seems phony and arrogant and just off-putting. She's supposed to be glamorous but just looks tired and plain. They have no romantic chemistry at all and in keeping with the time, share only a few tepid kisses, though much more is implied. The dialogue is unbelievably stilted, so ultra-witty and sophisticated that it never sounds like real conversation. It's based on a play and filmed in a very artificial, stagy way.

I was amazed at how dull the movie was and actually dozed off in the middle. Because it's about a man who pretends to be married to avoid commitment and a woman who wants to carry on with a married man, I didn't like or admire either of them. The voluminous gowns are vintage 50s and are the best part of the movie.

Movie Review: Excellent movie, mediocre dvd
Summary: 2 Stars

It is tragic that this classic film had to be marred by an unrestored treatment of the picture quality. I got it anyway because I don't use the VCR these days. Like everyone else, I hope for this to get to blue-ray, mabe then it will actually look better than VHS tape!

Movie Review: Also disappointed by DVD quality
Summary: 2 Stars

I was excited by this movie coming out on DVD because this is a wonderful movie but the quality of the DVD picture and sound was awful. The content of this movie is 5 stars, as far as I am concerned, but the quality of the DVD is 1 or 2 stars.

Movie Review: Dark video + faint scratchy audio = big problems
Summary: 1 Stars

From the first frame of the opening credits it was clear that the transfer was from a poor quality master and that no restoration had even been attempted. The picture is morbidly dark throughout. The sound level is atrociously low - I had to turn up the amp nearly to reference level to understand the dialog. The soundtrack was harsh, with strings braying like castrated trombones. The picture popped out of focus at least a half-dozen times, and on at least two occasions large black blobs sullied the picture. Republic/Artisan pat themselves on the back BOTH before and after the movie, for what I do not know. The announcement following "The End" startles, since it and it alone is recorded at the proper level.

I just A/B'ed this DVD with the "35th Annivesary" widescreen VHS and except for sharpness (which is lost in the darkness anyway) the Video wins hands down: the sound is at an appropriate level, and the vividness of the (Techni)colors is astounding.

This one's definitely going back, and I'm afraid to open the copies of Operation Petticoat and The Grass Is Greener which were released at the same time as installments in the "Cary Grant Collection". BTW, none of these are marked as anamorphic so I'm assuming they are not.

Republic/Artisan: what the heck were you thinking?

Movie Review: A great movie- a lousy DVD
Summary: 1 Stars

I just bought this because it is one of my favorite movies and my VHS tape was kaput after so many viewings. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!! It is supposed to be widescreen, digitally remastered and close-captioned. It is NONE OF THESE THINGS!! The film is full of lines, snow, etc. No re-mastering here. The menu only contains scene selection and play movie. If I thought I could get my money back, I would send this one back. It is most definitely NOT as advertised.
