Movie Reviews of Indian SummerMovie Review: Good movie, fair DVD Summary: 4 Stars
Indian Summer is a favorite movie of mine, yet I had only seen it on the VHS 4:3 format. I was disappointed that the DVD is listed as NTSC, which generally means the 4:3 pan-and-scan format. Upon reading other reviewers' comments about the DVD actually being widescreen, I immediately purchased the DVD. It turns out the the DVD listing and the reviewers were both right/wrong. The DVD IS in 4:3 NTSC format, but shows the entire widescreen version of the film. (Is this what they mean by "letterbox" format?) Anyway, I can see what I had previously been missing, but yet the reproduction quality is low when compared to true widescreen format DVDs. The other thing is that the film's sound is only digital stereo, no surround options at all. In short, buy this DVD for the great performance of the ensemble cast and warm feel of the movie, but don't expect much performance from the DVD.
Movie Review: A great movie Summary: 4 Stars
I absolutely love this movie! I don't feel the need to own many movies, but this is one I like to watch a couple times a year. Its a great friendship movie, much like The Big Chill, where a group of friends who went to camp together every summer as kids come back together as adults. Its about the comfort of old friends, even ones you haven't been in touch with for years, and the fun of re-living childhood good times. Its a very touching, sweet, yet funny movie.
Movie Review: If you went to camp, you will love it. Summary: 4 Stars
This isn't Oscar stuff but it is a fun, let's forget our troubles, enjoy a glass of wine, movie. If you liked the Big Chill, you will like this. It isn't as deep, but it is enjoyable. The scenery makes you yearn to be 14 again and have a first kiss by a lake. It takes you back where you left part of your youth.
Movie Review: no title Summary: 4 Stars
Mike Binder, the director, actually went to the camp depicted in this flic, as a child. A "Big Chill" type of ensemble picture with Vincent Spano of "Alive" and Alan Arkin. It was very good - gorgeous scenery of Lake Algonquin in Ontario. It was a real camp, which gave the film authenticity.
Movie Review: Great movie, low quality DVD, Widescreen Summary: 3 Stars
It's a favorite movie of ours, but I noticed that the quality wasn't the same as a typical DVD. The resolution wasn't good, and I could occasionally see white or black "flecks" like when you're watching a movie from a film projector. Also, it is not fullscreen as advertised, but letterbox (1:2.35), which is really wide. I'm actually happy about this.I called Paramount and they were aware of the accidental mis-labeling. Also they researched and said it was originally filmed in 1993 on 35mm, and the original transfer was used to make the DVD. I don't think this means Digitally Mastered as advertised. For the price I'm glad to have it on DVD, even though I already own it on VHS. I would have been happier if it were represented correctly.
