Movie Review: Enjoyable but rather whitewashed
Summary: 3 Stars
I largely agree with Libriarsque above. I first saw this as a teenager before reading the book and enjoyed it. Then I read the book which was far more intriguing with much more conflict, tension and mystery. Over the years I think I forgot which was which. Having recently seen the film again, it is sweet and inspiring in it's way, but seemed rather whitewashed and flat as compared to the novel. (also no-one ages at all, and Diana keeps her 70's mascara and eyelashes throughout the film! hehe). I felt inspired to see the film again after reading Karen Armstrong's excellent "Through the Narrow Gate" about her life in the convent. Now I'm looking forward to reading her sequel "Spiral Staircase." Of course I am thinking to re-read the novel "In this House of Brede" as well!
