Movie Reviews of In the Mouth of Madness

Movie Review: A minor masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

As stated elsewhere, not based on an actual Lovecraft tale, but - nevetheless - "In the Mouth of Madness" must rank as one of the finest exercises in Lovecraftian terror ever committed to celluloid. It's mercifully free of the gibberish that accompanies many Lovecraft imitations (the so-called 'Cthulhu Mythos')because John Carpenter is more interested in taking the central concepts from Lovecraft's best tales and putting his own unique spin on them. The result is a film that is genuinely scary, beautifully filmed and full of images that will remain with you long after you've switched the DVD player off. Everyone involved seems to be giving their best, and the results speak for themselves. A criminally underrated film.

Movie Review: An Outstanding Original
Summary: 5 Stars

Possibly the greatest movie of director John Carpenter's career, "In The Mouth Of Madness" is atmospheric mystery-horror with implications on a vast and even cosmic scale. Sam Neill plays a private investigator hired by a publishing house to find one of their bestselling authors who's suddenly gone missing, and his trail leads to a town that's supposed to exist only in the author's novels. That's really all you need to know going in; saying too much more would give away too much. Just know that this is going to bend all rationality and present seemingly impossible situations in a way that comes out very eerily believable. Masterful work by everybody on both sides of the camera.

Movie Review: What A Trip and A Mind-Marker!
Summary: 5 Stars

By mind-marker, I simply mean that this movie's impact on me cinematically speaking was so massive that I still feel it today, from my first viewing. Although it is far from the scariest film ever, it certainly is one of them. There is just something about THAT mysterious knocking green hand and THE young bike rider-turned-old that creeped me out for years. I still can't imagine what that creature that tore up the insane asylum looked like, making multiple viewings of this film a must for me. If you want the best of Carpenter, see The Thing or Big Trouble In Little China, but for a good scare and a visually mind-bending journey into horror and hell, watch this movie.

Movie Review: Horror film? THIS IS IT!
Summary: 5 Stars

Horror is my genre; Carpenter is my director and Mouth is the most spine tingling movie in the past 20 years. This is the most under-rated of all Carpenter classics and is not well heard of by the general public. This film starts with a great story and John Carpenter takes it to the level only his fans can appreciate. Mouth begs to be seen by anyone who likes a scare, but thrives on us horror freaks. If you haven't seen this film you are out of the loop. I have heard many renowned film "critics" say that not only is this Carpenter's best work ,but also it is the best of the over looked films. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.Trust me.

Movie Review: Carpenter's most entertaining film to date.
Summary: 5 Stars

Sam Neill is John Trent, an insurance investigator sent to search for a missing horror author. He eventually discovers that the writer's latest piece of fiction may actually be coming to life. Mind-bending horror/thriller in the style of H.P. Lovecraft is one of John Carpenter's best films to date. It's scary, intelligent, and quite a bit of fun. The special effects are great and the creepy score from Carpenter is one of the few of his that doesn't simply repeat itself to death. Loses some momentum in the last ten minutes, but goes out with a real bang. Sam Neill is terrific, as usual.
