Movie Reviews of In the Mouth of Madness

Movie Review: Mere perfection
Summary: 5 Stars

In the best horror film I've ever seen, Sam Neil and Jurgen Prochnow are giving great performances of this mind-boggling story! Neil had been one of my favorite actors ever since Jurassic Park, and he's just great for this part of a private investigator for insurance frauds. As the tension climaxes, he and Prochnow (playing *almost* God) help create the horryfying climate of the movie! It is the best, not only because at points it does get very scary, but also because it has a very solid and quite original screenplay, and a perfectly-fitting musical score. A great horror film should not only scare you and offer you an easily understandable case and ending, and Carpenter knows that very well! I think it'll be long time before we can see something even remotely as neat as this one!

Movie Review: Carpenters best work since The Thing
Summary: 5 Stars

John Carpenter has always been a favorite of mine. He is very distinct in his directing style, from the use of cinemascope, to writing the music, to using alot of the same actors and actresses from one movie to the next. I think he has really done a service to his fans by adding director commentary to his movies on DVD. I think this shows just how proud he is of his work, that he is willing to talk about his past movies, as well as his upcomming projects. In The Mouth Of Madness, was a movie that I got simply because of Carpenters name on the box. This is due to the fact that I had never heard of it up to the point I saw it on the shelf in the video store. Carpenters best work since The Thing, and that's saying alot since there are some really good movies in that span.

Movie Review: 101% H.P. Lovecraft
Summary: 5 Stars

When John makes a movie, you can expect it to not take itself too seriously, and allow itself to have some fun, and sometimes go overboard with cheese. He likes to play, and he remains independant, even though he hooks up with major production studios. The man has a gift...

...and when it comes to a Horror film, he is all out apocalypse! Once he moved on from his Fog and Halloween days, the guy really began to realize himself, and perfect his art. The Thing, Prince Of Darkness, Village Of The Damned, They Live and now In the Mouth Of Madness. All of these films are perfect and without error. I never tire of watching these films.

I don't know what to say. Don't read the plot, just watch it, trust me, you will LOVE it, it lives up to its name.

Movie Review: What I Think This Movie Is Really About
Summary: 5 Stars

I think "The Mouth of Madness" is about the movie watcher. It's also about Capitalism (profit as the top priority, even beyond right and wrong). Additionally, it is about the assertion of the moral order, despite The Modern Era's belief, that right and wrong are only constructs. What makes this movie different from his other horror movies is that this one is about The Audience. The message seems clear: this isn't just a movie, it is real life and it is happening to YOU, right now! In a figurative sense, that seems accurate. In The Modern Era we don't talk about this kind of thing, we just experience it, subconsciously, in movies like this.

The message of horror: when the moral order is violated, bad things happen.

Movie Review: Best horror film in recent years!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the best horror film I have seen in over 20 years and the best Carpenter film I have ever seen(and yes, I have seen Escape from New York, Halloween, Prince of Darkness, and The Thing). It's really unnecessary to pass judgment on other persons points of view.

In the Mouth of Madness is a true homage to the genius that was H.P. Lovecraft. The characters were living "as they were written", and I have certainly read books where the characters were a little stilted and stiff. I believe that is what the actors were portraying in this movie.

The idea of reality not being as we perceive is a wonderful concept for a movie. I would recommend MOM to any horror fan. I own the movie and watch it frequently.
