Movie Reviews of Immortal Beloved (Deluxe Edition)Movie Review: Simply Brilliant Summary: 5 Stars
Gary Oldman gives a tour de force performance as Ludwig Van Beethoven. The story centers around the search of the "Immortal Beloved". There were three letters Ludwig wrote, yet not mailed, that put his heart down on paper. Who was she? There is your search. To see Ludwig place his head on the piano to hear the notes of "Adagio Sostenuto" or "Moonlight Serenade" is beyond beautiful. Bearing in mind that Ludwig can't hear, he has to "feel" the vibrations emanting from the piano. Gary Oldman simply at his his finest, as he is really playing Beethoven! I have seen Amadeus, and it ranks as of my all time faves.....but to see the maestro Beethoven suffer, and be glorified thru his music is as close to perfection as one can ask. I can only ask. If you were given a GREAT gift like Beethoven was....yet could not hear the notes you were composing......how would you react? After watching Gary Oldman, I can envision the great maestro himself nodding in agreement. If you don't see this movie, you are denying one of the greatest performances by an all star cast. See this movie, see Ludwig as he was, and see the women who loved him through his difficulties.
Movie Review: Gripping Tale Brings to Life the Greatest Composer We Will Ever Know Summary: 5 Stars
Immortal Beloved shows us that even our heroes are human.
Gary Oldman brings the legendary Ludwig van Beethoven to life, and while purists may dispute the accuracy of the film's contents, that should not take away from the film anymore more than the creative licenses taken in A Beautiful Mind should.
The mystery surrounding the genius composer's true love is brought to life as a man who called Ludwig friend would attempt to honor his last wishes by searching for the woman who was to be Beethoven's heir, according to a letter written by the composer before his death. But it is not as easy as all that, for the woman is not named in the letter except for the title "immortal beloved."
So begins a journey that will define the movie and reveal Beethoven's inability of dealing with people-even his own brothers-after feeling betrayed by them in some way, from his point of view.
All in all a masterpiece retelling of the life of a man who spent his life making masterpieces despite being misunderstood by many.
Again I am no student of the real Beethoven so my comments are based only on what I saw in the film itself.
Movie Review: Better Than Amadeus? Summary: 5 Stars
This 1995 film by Bernard Rose is perhaps even better than 1984's triumphant "Amadeus" in my opinion (and let's be honest, it's impossible not to compare the two). I've always preferred Beethoven's music to Mozart's, and I just enjoy the detective story within this film better than Salieri's psychotic jealousy as he unfold's Mozart's story in Amadeus. Gary Oldman does an incredible job of playing the aging composer. Not only is he convincing as a deaf man, but he even learned to actually play his instruments for this role with such believability. He should have received the Best Actor Oscar for this role that year. It's an incredible performance through and through. Unlike Amadeus, which never really puts us into the mind of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Immortal Beloved" puts you directly into "the mental state of the composer" as you subconsciously and consciously learn about his life and career. Besides this, there's a conscious nod to Stanley Kubrick throughout that definately warmed me to an already great film that I can't help but call the most underrated film of the 1990's.
Movie Review: Magnificent! Summary: 5 Stars
The year is 1827, and famed composer Ludwig van Beethoven has just died. He leaves his estate to someone only known as his "Immortal Beloved," so his secretary goes about finding out who she may be among his many lovers.
This movie is absolutely beautiful. Beethoven's music, of course, is the soundtrack and also the main plot point, as the writer/director speculates on the events in the maestro's life that inspired each piece. The movie goes back and forth in time to each of the important people in Beethoven's life and we see his music evolve from much tragedy, some euphoria, and most of all, his passion for life. There is even a persuasive scene accounting for his deafness.
With lavish costumes and picturesque Czech locations, it's lovely to look at but even more impressive is Gary Oldman's portrayal of Beethoven. Though playing a conceited, temperamental, and often angry man, Oldman still wins our sympathy and he is at his charismatic best. If you love Beethoven's music and/or period films, you'll enjoy this exciting biopic. Highly recommended.
Movie Review: A Tremendous Achievement, Kudos to All Involved! Summary: 5 Stars
Has it really been all these years since this truly Wonderful movie came out? It seems like only yesterday!
I am just SO amazed whenever a writer can sit there and "come up" with plausible scenereos and plot-lines that really DO seem so totally "right" and "real" as in the case of this simply marvelous script for "Imortal Beloved"...phew, what a grand story, and so totally fitting for truly the grandest of all of the world's greatest composers. To everyone, even the most remotely involved in making this movie, I say a hearty and heart-felt "Thank You". This, my friends, truly is Great Film-making, and I cannot recommend this movie highly enough to people who perhaps have not seen it. Has there EVER been a more touching, poignant, nod to "The Great One", LvB, than this beautiful, heart-rending, cinematic gem? Gary Oldman is absolutely spot-on as the tortured and desperately lonely Ludwig, tormented all his life by this great wrong done him. This movie belongs in your collection, "Mr and Mrs America...Wherever You Are" as Edward R. Murrow used to say. ~operabruin
