Movie Reviews of Il Divo - Live at the Greek

Movie Review: A Pleasure and A Treasure!
Summary: 5 Stars

Say what you will about Simon Cowell, some love him, some don't, but he knows his stuff when it comes to music. Il Divo is his creative genius at work. Being a lover of both genres, I have to admit to being skeptical about the whole tenors, baritone and pop artist meet multi-lingual POP music idea. I hadn't heard any of IL DIVO's music until, channel surfing one night, I heard them perform on a TV special. I was amazed at the beauty of the harmonies, the transformation of the translated music and the gorgeous production. I purchased this DVD the following day and have lost count how many times I have watched it and shared it with others. To a one, these people are charming and talented and give performances that are as beautiful to watch as they are to listen to. The DVD is so well shot that it gives you the feeling of being there in the audience. At one point in the program, Urs Buhler talks about their song, "Passera." He says, "it is one of his favorite songs, not just for the beautiful Italian melody, but because of the text. Passera is about music and how listening to music can get us through some very difficult times in life." As a military wife whose husband is deployed, I agreed with him whole-heartedly. And I thank Urs and David and Sebastian and Carlos for making this lonely and difficult time more bearable. To those who appreciate them, they truly are a gift. Leave aside any pre-conceived notions or cynicism...see and hear this one for yourself, you'll be glad you did. It is a singularly unique musical experience.

Movie Review: Outstanding Performance
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I have been fans of Il Divo since they first appeared at the Chevrolet (now Oakdale) Theatre in Wallingford, CT, in 2005. We have attended two of their live performance--early 2009 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in southern Connecticut and last Sunday at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford.

This DVD offers an up-close view of the four men that the live performance often cannot (unless you have $200 or more to shell out per seat). And the typical CD provides just the singing. However, let me state that live, DVD, or CD--all provide the passion with which they sing.

My wife and I are senior citizens. I am 72, and my wife is a bit younger. But we are often oferwhelmed with the quality of their performances. Each of them brings a unique and singular voice to the group. We are fans of r&b, jazz, and country music. We have always enjoyed symphony performances, too. But Il Divo simply "takes our breath away" at times. How corny is that? Many of our life experiences are recalled in song after song. One does not need to understand the language in which many of their performances are presented. The quality and the passion with which they sing is awesome for the two of us.

"Il Divo: Live at the Greek Theatre" is worth every penny you have to pay. My advice is, though, save your pennies and find a way to purchase this DVD and get yourself to a live performance. You will never forget it, regardless of your age.

Movie Review: My favorite boy band!
Summary: 5 Stars

I hadn't heard of Il Divo until a friend lamented that she and her family couldn't get tickets to a sold-out concert in Canada (they had planned to cross the border for this concert). She then went on to describe in great detail how handsome this international group of singers are. After watching this DVD several times, I couldn't agree more. (Though they are all cute, I think Sebastien is my favorite "divo.")

I wasn't sure how pop songs would translate into a contemporary classical setting---but these songs, "Unbreak My Heart" and "Unchained Melody" sound great. I love the song "Isabel" b/c that same music (Faure's Pavane, Op. 50) is featured in a documentary of the School of American Ballet/NYC Ballet. My favorite song is "I Believe in You." It's not necessarily the best musically of the selections, but the lyrics are so inspirational. If you're feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, etc., play this track on repeat in your DVD player.

Very enjoyable--if you like artists like Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Josh Groban, and Amici Forever, then you're sure to love Il Divo.

Movie Review: IL Divo, the new Beatles Phenomenon
Summary: 5 Stars

Absolutly a must see for all ages. These four guys are truly spectacular in their performance. Exellent production work, good light show, good editing, beautifull scenography, but mostly important, you will notice that these guys can really sing. Their voices sound in so much harmony and balance that I guarantee you will drop you jaws like I did. Exellent idea by Simon (Il Divo creator) to combine operatic and pop music. This is something different and uncommon to see, specially today, that almost anyone can sing with the help of a computer. Il Divo, an Italian name, stands for " divine male performer " and they reside at UK, however none of them are from either these countries. They are from France, Swiss, Spain, and USA. I personally like a little bit more the voice of the American Tenor (David) due to his versatility of using low and high notes. My wife prefer the spanish guy,(Carlos)a recognized Baritone. I'm sure you'll have your choice as well. Anyway beware, the Il Divomania is gonna get you !!!! ......10 stars for them......

Movie Review: Il Divo Live At The Greek, And At Their best
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought Il Divo live At The Greek and enjoyed it so much I bought four more copies to send to friends.

Not only are they superb, individually and in their voice blending, but
their unpretentious interaction with an appreciative audience is remarkable.

The entire production is staged for maximum professional effect, without the usual, obnoxious and phony stage effects.

The appreciative audience listens during each number and doesn't start the
screaming and applause until each number is finished; what a remarkable
compliment to the singers. The audience, en masse, wants to hear each
number in its entirety.

The four singers actually sitting down at the front of the stage and
inviting the audience up to hold hands, hug, take pictures with them, etc., all the while they are beautifully singing "Somewhere", is a pleasure to see.

I recommend these four clean cut, superb singers to every audience,
young or old.
