Movie Reviews of Ike - Countdown to D-DayMovie Review: I Like Ike Summary: 4 Stars
Ike depicted well by Tom Selleck. A history and bio of Ike leading up to D-Day that was well handled in this movie. Selleck was a pro in this role. A much underarted movie.

Movie Review: Tom as Ike Summary: 4 Stars
As a history piece, I enjoyed it. I feel that Tom did an excellent job of the movie.
Movie Review: I Wanted So Much to Like This Movie Summary: 3 Stars
I wanted so much to like this movie. D-Day, and the Allied drive to Berlin is, indeed my favorite chapter in World War II history. I have read dozens of books on the topic, as well as bios of Dwight D. Eisenhower and his principle lieutenants. I truly admire Ike, and I am also a huge Tom Selleck fan. So what happened?
The themes of the film are well handled. Selleck is a top-notch actor, and portrayed Ike's burdens of command admirably. The casting of the film's characters, however, spoils any chance that I can sit through this film and thoroughly enjoy it. I can forgive a reasonable amount of artistic license in war films, such as the multitude of exotic scenes in every take in Patton (1970), but I need my characters to at least resemble their historical figures. Despite the cropped haircut, Sellect is much too tall, and too young as Ike. James Remar looks and acts nothing like Omar Bradley and Gerald McRaney perhaps turns out the worst performance of his long acting career as Patton. I was under the impression that actors do research on their characters. In our time of great historical film epics, I guess I was expecting another great performance like "Gettysburg." The film and the script had so much promise. The actors on the screen did not look or act at all like the true historical figures that orchestrated this climatic moment in history. I realize this is a movie, not a documentary, however, as a Selleck and D-Day fan, I was terribly disappointed. Giving this film a three-star rating is being generous.
Movie Review: Not Bad But Lacks Muscle Summary: 3 Stars
Magnum PI as Ike? Credit to Tom Selleck: his understated Ike portrayal is far more complex and engaging than the bland, amiable Ike conveyed by most Ike biographies. Selleck's performance truly shone.
Generally, the film is evenly paced and provides a cursory but informative view of one aspect of high command in WW2. Yet it has flaws. For instance, the supporting cast is, frankly, somewhat weak (except for the splendid actor who played pesky Monty). The film also deviates from some plainly known facts. Bedell Smith is portrayed as a softie sounding board and feel-good chum, not as the ruthless, vain, and superbly efficient SOB he was. Putting those quibbles aside, the film allows an enjoyable, visual break for anyone tired of reading history.
