Movie Reviews of Ike - Countdown to D-DayMovie Review: A portrait of the supreme allied commander Summary: 4 Stars
Not quite a documentary, and not quite an action-packed war movie. This is more of a behind-the-scenes look at General Dwight D. Eisenhower from the time he was made the supreme commander to the time he got notice that casualties were less than were expected (D-Day was successful).
Tom Selleck portrays Eisenhower and does a great job. It's hard to know if Eisenhower presented himself in the same manner (such as when the general has a "discussion" with Patton about his behavior), but his mannerisms in showing the internal struggle in making the decisions that would change the path of the war was fabulous. Watching him handle the many personalities involved was interesting, but given the movie's length, I didn't get as much interplay as I would have liked.
This film may not hold the attention of someone wanting to watch a typical war film, but for military history buffs or people wanting a glimpse of an under-appreciated historical figure, I would recommend this movie.
Movie Review: A fascinating insight into contemporary WW2 history. Summary: 4 Stars
This impressive film covers the time span of World War 2 up to the start of D-Day. Tom Selleck gives an outstanding performance in the role of General Eisenhower and the film accurately chronicles the dillema he faced, constantly, in making the tough decision to commit hundreds of thousands of men to an attack which could have resulted in substantially greater losses than history now documents. This is a definitive movie for those WW2 film buffs who prefer to see accuracy and attention to detail, in place of Hollywood glamour. Tom Selleck is supported by a great crowd of lesser known character actors who play their roles vividly, realistically and with feeling. The film was shot entirely in New Zealand and sets created with detailed accuracy - well revealed in the additional section on the DVD outlining how the movie was made. Most enjoyable viewing and well worthy of inclusion in any War film collection.
Movie Review: critically acclaimed WW II drama.. Summary: 4 Stars
briefly: Tom Selleck plays Eisenhower, Commander of the Allied Forces (before he became President). This movie details the strategy of the Allied Forces as they plan and prepare the Normandy campaign (sending massive troops through France to battle Hitler). This proved the be the beginning of the end for Hitler as the war in Europe would soon be won. The war in the Pacific would be won due to 2 atomic weapons.
excellent acting by Selleck and all the supporting actors. You get a sense of the pressure and pain Eisenhower went through before making his decision. He knew there would be many casualties and wounded. Selleck plays him perfectly, in one of the best performances of his career.
* highly recommended
Movie Review: What a hell of a job? Summary: 4 Stars
What a hell of a job when you are the Supreme commander of all allied forces in Europe and that you must keep a balance and peace between two of your commanders, Patton and Montgomery, who hates themselves furiously, a French general, Charles de Gaulle, who is always thinking that France must have a predominant role in Europe and forces from other different countries like Canada, Australia, New Zeland and so on. What a hell of a job? So, if you are interested to be in the shoes of the Supreme commander, watch this movie. It is a very good one.
Movie Review: Tom Selleck's finest performance Summary: 4 Stars
Tom Selleck doesn't really look like Eisenhower, but he sure looks like a general in this superbly crafted and beautifully photographed docudrama. Not a single scene of battle is shown, but the awesome planning and tensions of warfare are all there. Watch for the scene with Gerald McRaney of Major Dad who may have tried for the lead role in this one as the controversial General George Patton. This fine film, and the Jesse Stone movies starring Selleck are the finest work he's ever done.
