Movie Reviews of Ike - Countdown to D-DayMovie Review: Excellent Portrayal of Ike! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent portrayal of Eisenhower by Tom Selleck. The film was entertaining and helped me appreciate the difficult situations Ike faced before D-Day, such as planning the invasion with a multi-national staff (i.e. lots of egos and diverse opinions) and disciplining friends (e.g. Gen Patton). This film shows how Ike was truly a great leader as a general in anticipation of being a great leader as president.
When I first heard Selleck was going to take on the role of Ike, I thought of Magnum PI and could not see how it would work. HOWEVER, Selleck studied Ike thoroughly even to the point of taking on his mannerisms. He even had Ike's posture down pat. So, I also came away from this film appreciating Selleck's acting ability much more.
Do get a copy of this film. You won't regret it.
Movie Review: When Character Was King" Summary: 5 Stars
I just watched Ike - Countown to D -Day. I was very impressed with Tom Sellack's portrayal of The Great Eisenhower. I am a huge admirer of Eisenhower and really thought that Tom Sellack was able to bring accross so beautifully Ike's character & humanity. Eisenhower represents, something that is so lost in today's world, character & strength. I recently became interested in Eisenhower, and read several books on him, as well as speaches he wrote. This man was an incredible human being and Tom Sellack, to my surprise, is able to capture the essence of this Humble Giant, Ike had that very rare and unusual gift of Great simplicity. I highly recommend this film for those who are not familiar with Eisenhower. I can honestly state that Eisenhower was our greatest leader, and the world will never see another IKE.
Movie Review: Interesting Historical Telemovie Summary: 5 Stars
This is a quite a good telemovie about one of the most important leaders of the 20th Century set during a cruical part of World War Two. I was half expecting to see Magnum PI playing General Eisenhower, but this wasn't the case. Tom Selleck did an excellent job protraying Ike and he obviously did his research. The only thing I didn't like was that most of this telemovie was shot inside buildings, but I suppose being a telemovie, there wasn't much of a budget for CGI & special effects. Having read "Eisenhower" by Stephan Ambrose and watched documentaries about Eisenhower, I would love to see a mini-series about Eisenhower that covered his life from his birth to his death, as I consider him to be one of the most historically important people of the 20th Century.
Movie Review: A WWII VET GIVES IT A THUMBS UP Summary: 5 Stars
Back when this movie first premiered on TV on A&E, I had the chance a couple of days later to be sitting around a Doctor's waiting room and an elderly gentleman asked if I had seen the movie. I told him I had and furthermore I was always very interested in WWII history. He was happy to hear that as he was not only a WWII vet, but had had the opportunity to meet and talk with Ike during WWII.
He was quite impressed with Tom Selleck's performance as was I. I think he captured the essence of Ike quite well as a man who was born to lead. The movie seemed historically accurate and the fact that there was so much debate over the D-Day invasion was quite fascinating. I also enjoyed James Remar as Gen. Omar Bradley. Better than average TV movie.
Movie Review: D-Day, behind the curtains Summary: 5 Stars
This is a drama, not an action film. You could call it a war-room drama. Tom Selleck captures you from the opening moments of the film and holds you, just a super job. The filming is absolutely gorgeous and inspired. There is something about the color and lighting that is unusual and captivating, and the detailing is impressive. All of this created a dramatic feel and mood that drew me into this place and time. I was so drawn in that I wanted it to be twice as long, I didn't want it to end. But although short, it still tells this particular story and emphasis very effectively. And the major emphasis, based on historical records, is one I was unfamiliar with. And it is moving. Highly recommended.
