Movie Review: Great character study
Summary: 5 Stars
I found this film to be quite engaging and maybe at times a little uncomfortable but in a good way. I could see the ticking timebombs everywhere and felt the tension as things were about to bubble over. It's not a typical guy movie. These friends have alot of growing up to do and I feel like by the end of it, they've done just that over the course of the weekend. Wounds that were left years ago are torn open and finally given a chance to heal. The acting is top notch from everyone involved. If your a fan of Martin Cummins, David Hewlett or Ian Tracy, this is not a film you want to miss.
Summary of Ice Men
It's "just the guys" when Vaughn invites his childhood best friends up to the family cabin for a leisurely winter weekend. As they break out the cards and plan the next day?s hunting trip, it becomes obvious that time and separation has altered the men. New rivalries and sexual tension combine with old secrets to upset their cozy routines. Then the arrival of some much unexpected guests further threatens the survival of their long-treasured friendship.When five old friends go to a cabin in the winter woods, they don't expect to find their buried secrets and resentments exposed, but that's what happens in Ice Men. Vaughn (Martin Cummins, Dark Angel) has taken ownership of the family cabin, but it's haunted by memories of his brutal father. He invites his three best friends to join him for a weekend, but turns sullen and resentful when his older brother Trevor (Ian Tracey, Desolation Sound) shows up as well. The friends drink, gamble, hunt for deer, play ice hockey, and wrestle with some unexpected sexual tension--and when Vaughn's ex Renee (Brandy Ledford, Andromeda) shows up, everything that's simmering bubbles over. Ice Men delves into the ways men do and don't communicate--but it doesn't delve very deep. The actors are game, but their characters are little more than bland stereotypes. Tracey, as the self-destructive and aimless older brother, has the best role and shows some raffish charisma. Brief nudity and sexual activity. --Bret Fetzer
