Movie Reviews of I Was a Male War BrideMovie Review: Nothing says comedy like a man in a dress Summary: 4 Stars
Cary Grant has always been one of my favorite actors: handsome, versatile, charming. Ann Sheridan is often underrated and certainly died too young. Together, they make a fairly predictable pair in a fairly predictable film. She is an officer in the peace keeping troops in France after World War II; he is a French officer who is assigned a mission in which she accompanies him. Neither like each other then (of course) fall madly in love (in a hay stack, of all places). They get married, mix ups ensue, they have to get him legally in to America but all the rules are written for war Brides (not war Husbands). Cary Grant has to get aboard the departing ship to America but can only do it if he disguises himself as a war Bride. As handsome as he is, he does not make a good looking woman! Regardless, this is a charming movie with a few laugh out loud moments. If it's on sale, buy it.
Movie Review: I Wasn't a Male War Bride Summary: 4 Stars
As a fan of the classics and one who one who is married to an admirer of Cary Grant's movies I must say this is a very entertaining movie. Unlike movies today that give a perverted slant to men dressing up as women, this one makes a purely funny and enjoyable look at what the quintessential leading man looks and acts like when dressed as a woman. It's silly entertainment, not to be taken seriously. If you want to be entertained then get this movie for your collection. If you want something serious then get The Killing Fields. Fans of Cary Grant will not be disappointed.
Movie Review: I Was a Male War Bride Summary: 4 Stars
This is a typical Cary Grant romantic comedy, filled with mayhem and improbable but enjoyable antics. Grant plays a Brit who marries an American military woman during WWII. The war is over and he's trying to emigrate to the U.S. Unfortunately the system isn't set up to handle men who married military women, so hilarity ensues. It's fun comedy that they just don't make anymore.
Movie Review: Caey Grant humor Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good movie, a little slow at the start, and Carey is playing a French Captain;however he has no French accent. Yet still a keeper if you are a CG fan.
Movie Review: Not as good as other Grant comedies. Summary: 3 Stars
Compared to such classics as Bringing Up Baby and Mr. Blandings Build His Dream House, Grant is not in top comedic form here. I agree with a previous reviewer that the pacing of the movie is off and lacks that true screwball energy. But it is still pleasant and fun. Be ready to suspend your disbelief, too, because Grant is about as French as Tony Blair.
