Movie Reviews of I Spy - Season 1

Movie Review: Slick Series, All 28 Season One Episodes Are On This DVD
Summary: 4 Stars

The 82 hour-long episodes (all in color) of the spy adventure series "I Spy" ran from 1965-1968 on NBC.
All 28 episodes from season one are on this DVD, there was no pilot episode.

It was a top-notch spy saga with a fair amount of the same "tongue-in-cheek" self-parody found in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." series and the popular James Bond movie franchise. But don't expect the same level of gadgetry and gimmicks; "I Spy" is much more about the witty banter between its pair of spies, Kelly Robinson (Robert Culp) and Alexander Scott (Bill Cosby). Their cover as they travel the world on assorted missions is tennis, Kelly is a tennis pro and Scotty is his trainer. They work for an unnamed U.S. espionage agency.

The intelligent and witty tone of the show obviously appealed to its fans as reflected by its three year broadcast run and subsequent syndication. Much of the credit for this goes to Sheldon Leonard who incorporated the more subtle comedy elements he had experimented with when producing "Make Room for Daddy", "The Andy Griffith Show", and "The Dick Van Dyke Show".

Cosby was hardly an unknown at the time of the series premiere. He was a wildly popular stand-up comic who had appeared many times on television variety shows and sold millions of record albums featuring his semi-autobiographical comedy routines. But his Alexander Scott character is generally a pretty serious guy (he does occasionally sneak in some of his comedy routines) and Cosby's portrayal is quite believable. Prior to this no comedian (and certainly no black comedian) had stared in an action show.

Culp is not so much the dashing James Bond style hero as a contemporary version of the less macho Bret Maverick type. He is not above pleading ignorance or confusion in a crisis. Fortunately the chemistry was excellent between the two stars.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Movie Review: Confusion on release
Summary: 4 Stars

I got an e-mail from Amazon today. It's about season 1 of "I Spy" the old series, being available April 28. One can find that season 2 and 3 will be available April 28 as well.

In 2006 I bought what was available on box sets of "I Spy" There was Box set 2 and box set 3. The only disc labeled 1 was a single DVD with 4 episodes. The slipcase was numbered "1." On box set two the numbers on the individual cases continue from 8 to 14. On Box set 3 they continue from 15 through 21. The implication is that "1" should be 1 through 7.

With Amazon's note (the way Anmazon notifies a person whgen something is available is very helpful) I thought "Great," I can finally get the complete season 1. I looked at the episode list and the 4 shows on my disc marked 1 are all on season 1. However, in checking, I found that episodes all ready on my box sets 2 and 3 are also on season 1 available April 28. It seems bizarre. I'm thinking these, released by Image Entertainment, are previous releases, which by the way were $30+. The new season releases on Amazon are a bargain at $12.99! (2 and 3 are $14.99.) I'm thinking I am just stuck with what I have unless want to go into situation of duplication of episodes. It was a fun old series with the banter between the stars and often guests who became big names. I liked the exotic locales. Anyone know what's happening? It SEEMS a new company has re-packaged and re-issued but in a different order than Image Entertainment, who released the box sets in 2006. Tom at aircheck@skynet.be

Movie Review: The Price is Right
Summary: 4 Stars

It's great to watch this show again after so many years. Many of the other shows from the era slid into silliness, but I Spy was a class act. These transfers are not too bad. They are a bit dirty, particularly the (excellent) opening graphics. So, essentially, this isn't quite on par with the transfer of The Invaders for instance. Shadow areas are also a bit crushed. Overall the presentation is nice and is quite pleasant upconverted. The price is what hooked me into buying the first season. No regrets, but I would have paid extra for a real remaster.

Movie Review: Plink Plink 4 Bangs
Summary: 4 Stars

That's from the opening theme, one of the best. This show made it on the writing and location filming and most of all the rapport between the leads. It is interesting that they had that down from the first episode.I think they did something they don't do anymore, something they did using real film...rehersal.

I never really like commentaries however these are really good especially Robert Culp.

Movie Review: Newly Remastered Edition banner across bottom?
Summary: 4 Stars

I received Seasons 1 & 2, they looked nice (except for some scratches on the white-background opening credits) but neither the slipcases nor the clamshell boxes had the black banner across the bottom reading "Newly Remastered Edition" as Amazon's photos show. Can anyone else tell me if their copies (Seasons 1, 2 & 3) have it? Thank you!
