Movie Reviews of I.O.U.S.A.

Movie Review: Why isn't this on Primetime Television?
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent documentary... it's scary that as I write this in 2011 the national debt is $14.2 trillion, and in the movie in 2007 it's $8.7 trillion.

Obviously, the people in power don't care because the deficits are getting larger and they don't understand that if the dollar falls apart (it becomes monopoly money with no value or trust) we go back to the middle ages. Read up on the downfall of the Roman Empire, it wasn't a military enemy that brought them down. Politicians are surrounded by "yes men" and are shielded from the realities.

Something that was NOT mentioned in the movie that should scare every American is that the Federal Reserve can print money outside of the government. When the government runs a deficit it borrows (this is added to the national debt). But the Fed can print additional money outside of that. Just recently they printing $1.25 trillion for mortgages. They dilute our savings when they do that with inflation and Congress has no say or approval. They can TAX THE WORLD when they print money because the U.S. dollar is the reserve currency of the world. That's power that we as voters have no control over, but we have to live with the consequences, when the dollar implodes.

Also, not mentioned is that Money is Debt (since 1971). Look at the money in your wallet. It says "Federal Reserve Note". A note is a debt instrument. Our money is inherently sick, until we change how our money system works, we'll continue to have to borrow. It's a vicious cycle, that won't stop until the whole thing falls apart.

Movie Review: Clear, simple and to the point explanation of the credit crisis
Summary: 5 Stars

I. O. U. S. A. is a wake up call from some of the government experts and policy consultants (not lobbyists) who have been warning the President for years about this coming crisis. Philanthropist Peter G. Peterson put $1 billion of his own money in this organization and hired America's Watchdog, GAO Comptroller General David Walker to head up the effort.
This movie is a "must watch." CNN ran a shorter version on a recent Sunday with several of the stars live.
This is real, it is disturbing and it is timeless. The government was already in serious debt BEFORE the credit crisis hit the fan. We won't get out of this easily nor will most investment advisors even address it.
I will bet your advisor sat you down to discuss your "risk tolerance" years ago and you agreed that you could stand a 10% short-term decline but that 20% would be troubling. In the past seven months the stock market fell 45% and no one called you and the market is about to fall further and you probably have not reallocated your portfolio to gold, silver and inverse or bear market funds. The losses are so bad your advisor doesn't want to discuss such a painful outcome with you.
Watch this film and you will understand that it is unlikely that you will see much of the money you had one or two years ago ever in your lifetime.
It's troubling for the government but it is tragic for you.

Movie Review: Informative, Compelling, and Important
Summary: 5 Stars

It's almost impossible to get people concerned about something as important yet obtuse as the national debt. This excellent documentary goes a long way toward accomplishing that.

Through a combination of interviews, "Jaywalking"-style public quiz sessions, animated graphics, and archival footage, I.O.U.S.A. does a good job of keeping the viewer's attention as it slowly reveals the shocking state of our nation's financial situation.

The documentary bills itself as nonpartisan -- a label I agree with. Though the subject matter may be stereotypically "conservative", interviewees include both Republican and Democratic politicians, and the film pulls no punches in highlighting George W. Bush's runaway spending practices. To skip this film in the belief that it is a piece of partisan propaganda would be a mistake. Everyone needs to see this.

Other thoughts:

As a follower of Congressman Ron Paul and his Campaign for Liberty, I was glad to see him included in the film, appropriately in an interview on monetary policy. Having lived abroad in China, it was also good to see China highlighted for the fiscal thriftiness of its people -- and the worrying amount of U.S. debt their government has acquired. I can honestly say that the film did both subjects justice.

Movie Review: Easy to understand - A "must see" for all Americans
Summary: 5 Stars

I.O.U.S.A takes a very complex and boring topic - the fiscal health of our country - and explains it in simple, even entertaining terms. You don't need an economics background to understand the message. Most of the concepts are graphically illustrated. For instance, the historical review of the federal budget deficit is depicted by a penny rolling along the timeline graph from the founding of our country. They shy away from financial lingo to make it easy to understand. For instance, he refers to "unfunded promises" rather than "unfunded liabilities" when discussing Social Security and Medicare.

The interviews of people on the street are eye-opening. These are the people who will vote for or against needed reforms to solve our problems, and in some cases they don't even know what a budget deficit is.

The Saturday Night Live commercial skit, featuring Steve Martin, is hilarious.

[...]

I highly recommend this movie for all Americans so we can look past partisan bickering and get an unbiased view of what we are facing. In doing so we can hold our elected officials accountable for the necessary leadership to solve these looming problems.

Movie Review: We are in Financial Trouble.
Summary: 5 Stars

I.O.U.S.A. is a documentary that is a Must See for All Americans and for Everybody that live in the United States of America. The Citizens, Permanent Residents and the Government of America MUST FIX our Gross Domestic Product a.k.a. GDP. Everybody in the United States of America including the U.S.A.'s Government need to work together to fix our four Deficits which are: (1)Budget, (2)Savings, (3)Trade and (4)Leadership. The way that the economy is going in the U.S.A. it made me think of the Holy Bible's verses in Revelation 18:17 & 18 which says: For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! The U.S.A.'s Recession and Stagflation made me have to say may the Lord Jesus Christ the Nazarene help the U.S.A.! I hope that those Holy Bible's verses are not the U.S.A. but can it be the U.S.A.? Everybody in the U.S.A. let us NOT be Cruel to be Kind in the right measure!!
