Movie Reviews of I Could Go On SingingMovie Review: Judy goes out with a bang Summary: 5 Stars
I was familiar with Judy Garland because what child born in the 20th century hasn't seen The Wizard of Oz. Right? As I grew up, I became a huge classic movie fan and one day I bought the movie, Easter Parade, starring Fred Astaire (my favorite actor) and the girl who played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Another year goes by and I buy another movie called For Me and My Gal and-finally-discovered Judy Garland. Oh my goodness! What an actress she was. As for her singing...All I can say is she was one of the most soulful women I've ever heard. Afterwards, I immediately began to check out all the Judy Garland movies I could find from the library. Eventually I came across the movie, I Could Go On Singing. What a way to go out! Kind of dark compared to all those light-hearted musicals from her MGM years and I, the eternal optimist, wished it would've ended on a happier note. However, that being said, the note it did end on will have you clapping, because the last thing you see before "The End" is Judy Garland belting out a song as only she could and bowing to a thuderous applause. Whether you're a Garland fan or not, I highly recommend this movie: Judy Garland's last and one of her best.
Movie Review: Judy went out with a Bang! Summary: 5 Stars
This is probably in my top five favorite Judy movies! She is and always will be the greatest entertainer who ever lived. This film shows that Judy was an amazing actress! In the early MGM days, she made some fabulous films, but they never gave her the chance to play a dramatic role she deserved. I think another reason Judy was so amazing in this film is that she practically lived the life of Jenny Bowman. I also love the plot, Judy is kind of an Auntie Mame charecter, anyone who's seen the film knows what I'm talking about. It's a great movie for anyone who likes Judy, drama, or just a damned good film! What's also interesting is that in the hospitol scene (which I'm sure most of you know) Judy helped write a great deal of the dialogue. I'm glad they finally gave us a dvd of this film. I've been waiting forever! I actually paid $80 for a vhs copy of it a few years ago! But of course I still bought the dvd lol, after all, IT'S JUDY!
Movie Review: Garland at her best~ Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is incredible, Judy is truly at her best, a marvelous example of what made this gifted woman a legend! The musical numbers are phenomenal with all the flair and exuberance of the one and only Judy Garland, the acting top notch from all involved, Garland, Bogarde & Klugman, the banter Judy has with the audience is especially wonderful, a special kudos to the young boy who plays "Jennys" son away at boarding school, a talent to stand his own with this great lady.
I truly feel she was robbed the academy award for this performance!
A 100percent pure joy to watch and listen to this movie, this was a purchase as a gift, after viewing i sought out a copy for myself the music so much so i bought the soundtrak as well.
Movie Review: Judy goes out with a bang Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of my very favorite Judy Garland movies because the plot is almost haunting and because Judy plays such a multifaceted person. Jenny Bowman is a lot like Judy Garland and perhaps because of that viewers can identify with her and relate to her. In this film Judy plays a concert singer who is reunited with her estranged son and decides that she wants nothing more than to be a mother. Of course the movie ends dramatically and tragically (can Judy do it any other way?). It's a great movie, not just because of the story, but also because it includes Judy singing many original songs. We get to see Judy do so many different things in her final feature film role and she goes out with a bang.
Movie Review: Diagree with "Guilty Pleasure" review... Summary: 5 Stars
Sure, if you want to see Garland at her absolute peak, see the earlier MGM classics referenced in the intelligently written "Guilty Pleasures" review. Still, for those of us who are fascinated with the full spectrum of Garland's work, there is much to recommend "I Could Go On Singing"--despite its obvious flaws. Greatest of these is the warmth and straightforwardness of her rendition of "It Never Was You." Additionally, the authenticity of her acting in this film is striking. As an example, the love she felt for real-life son Joey Luft is well-documented. The love she conveys for her son in this movie gives you a sense of how she must have behaved toward her real son.
