"Hype!" is a fascinating documentary about the rise of grunge rock in the verdant Pacific Northwest. Amidst the fir trees, the fog and the rain, flannel-suited bands sang of angst, misery, and tackling their demons. It highlights the astounding popular successes of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, while shedding light on lesser-known groups such as Mudhoney, Crackerbash, the Gits, and Hammerbox. The music evokes the '90s. While grunge rock skyrockets into mainstream consciousness, there are also tragedies, such as the deaths of Nirvana's (Kurt Cobain - About a Son) and Andy Wood of Mother Love Bone. This documentary was also made before the tragic death of the front woman of (The Gits).
"Hype!" shows how grunge was born in the clubs of Portland, Tacoma, and Seattle. There's an interview with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, long before he made his soundtrack for Into The Wild. It's got Soundgarden's Chris Cornell before he went solo&attempted dance trip hop with Timbaland (Scream, or did a James Bond theme. This documentary shows the stars back when they were obscure, as well as the first performance of Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit." The front woman of Hammerbox resembles K.D. Lang - Live by Request. The songs sung in Seattle have a revolutionary spirit, long before the WTO protests rocked the city.
"Hype!" is a fascinating chronicle of a fascinating time. It's a time capsule of '90s alternative rock.
