Movie Review: Interesting update and staging
Summary: 4 Stars
Purists may decry the translation into English instead of the standard German, however it does not feel as if anything was lost. The unique staging and an update into modern times makes the opera quite enjoyable. Those who complain about the "over the top" staging may be forgetting that the story is supposed to be from a child's point of view. I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of the witch by a man in drag, with heavily exaggerated features. The kitchen scene with flour flying and modern appliances screaming was quite effective.
