Movie Review: How to Murder Your Wife
Summary: 4 Stars
Jack Lemmon, a cartoon writer and happy bachelor, set on NEVER getting married. Until one night, at a marriage ceremony (his friends) gone wrong, he and his buddies gets drunk and Mr. Lemmon ends up married to the beutiful woman who came out of a cake and she doesn't speak a word of English. The story then unfolds as he plays out his misery and fantasies of ridding his lovely wife through the cartoon charactors, fantasies, and stories he draws and retaining the bachelorhood he once had. As this story plays out, he realizes, of coarse, he can't live without her. It's not my favorite of his old movies, but no one can play this part better than Jack. He's quite a tird in this movie, but it comes around. The truth is beauty, and Virna Lisi is a goddess. Of all the women Jack Lemmon's character should hook up to, she would have to be miss galaxy. It's the farewell to bachelorhood and evil-wife shenanigans of acquaintences influencing his new wife that make his new marriage so rough. Loads of laughs, lots of fun. Worth checking out. I would give a big neigh to anyone accusing this movie of mysoginistic tendencies...or maybe I'd just laugh at them and call them an idiot. Pretty cute premise that takes an unexpected twist or two. My main complaint is that it's too long at 2 hrs, could have shaved off 20 minutes without thinking. The court scene and a bunch of italian dialogue especially, and some lawyer scenes. I enjoyed the butler's role. Lemon is quirky as usual, and checking out his townhouse was one of the hoots of the movie. More entertaining than funny overall, but too long. A chuckle all the way through. Jack Lemmon at his comedic best during his younger years. Virna Lisi was gorgeous and is still beautiful as she has gone on to more dramatic parts in her native Italy and won acting awards.
The plot becomes ridiculous during the court sequence, but if you can ignore that, the movie is enjoyable.

This movie is not my usual. I'm more into horror movies. But as comedies go, this one is tops. I've not seen a Jack Lemmon movie I didn't like and when I heard this was Jack's first lead role, I had to check it out. Jack Lemmon and comedy fans alike would love this movie. (Guys make sure your wife is away for this one)
