Movie Reviews of House of 1,000 Corpses

Movie Review: ((Fulci + Argento) / Lewis) x Hooper = Zombie = 1000 Corpses
Summary: 5 Stars

Rob Zombie has never pretended to do anything more than entertain. That's it. He doesn't try to pass his music off as high art - just art that gets you high. And it works. He knows what he loves as a listener, a viewer, a consumer - and he creates it. For that, this reviewer will be eternally grateful.

HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES isn't new. It isn't particularly inspired. It seems downright familiar most of the time. And it works. Anyone who salivates at the mention of Lucio Fulci, Herschell Gordon Lewis or Tobe Hooper will find lots to love in HOUSE... None of these filmmakers set out to do anything other than turn the stomach and tingle the spine - and Zombie slips into this role comfortably. He takes the tried-and-true formula of four teens on a weekend romp who get lost in the sticks and he opens up the throttle for 90 minutes. A bevy of colorful characters are introduced and many summarily offed. Subplots, legends, and twisted family origins fly in and out and our heroes and heroines are butchered and chased and captured and tortured and trapped and escape and are chased and captured and trapped and tortured again. All to the throbbing beat of a Zombie soundtrack and the twisted visuals and editing that hearken back to Zombie's own music videos.

If you love exploitative gorefests - if you love Rob Zombie's music - if you love classic horror films devoid of sitcom stars and who's-the-masked-man mysteries - then you'll love HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES. It isn't original. It isn't intelligent. It isn't art. It is 100% non-stop entertainment.

Movie Review: 5 Stars

Rob Zombie is the I am utterly sick and tired of all the brainless and unoriginal "Scream" wannabees out there (there are too many to even name any titles - just walk into any chain video store and look in the horror section).

House of a 1,000 corpses is probably the best horror film (in the traditional haunted house, ghost story, slasher film genre) to come along in a decade. This film, the brainchild of Rob Zombie, truly is an artistic triumph. There is real depth and density to the images Zombie has created.

I can watch this film again and again and always experience something new. There is such a tremendous attention to detail. The characters, sets, music, costumes, everything in it is clearly the result of a focused vision - and NOT the by-product of ten Hollywood Executives trying to figure out what will "sell".

I applaud Zombie for his vision and artistic creativity. He clearly is a terrific filmaker (to be honest, the main problem with his film could be that it is just too good a horror film - people don't know how to react to something that is this strong - and make no mistake - this IS strong, scary stuff.).

Anyway, all I can say is I hope Rob himself reads this review, if he does: PLEASE KEEP MAKING FILMS WE'RE ALL BEHIND Review: So you wanna be a psycho?
Summary: 5 Stars First off I'm not going to waste your time by telling you about the entire movie. If you're here then you've probably seen it and if not you don't want me to ruin it for you. This movie is cut-and-dry madness and I love it. What else would you expect from the Master of Mayhem(Rob Zombie)? If you are in to "real" horror movies then this is a must have to compliment your collection, if you're looking for something like "Scream" or "I Know What You Did Last Summer" then move along and forget you ever heard of this movie. If you watched it you would probably have to be commited shortly after. This is not "Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Friday the 13th" either, it's more like watching an unedited documentary on Ed Gein, the Manson Family, or a band of cannibals. However, if you know what you are getting yourself into and can wrap your mind around this movie enough to realize that it could and probably has or is happening somewhere in this country in real life then you will find it hilariously horror-filled. Bravo Mr. Zombie, I only hope that a Director's Cut version will be released so that I can see what they made you cut to obtain that R-rating(which, by the way, is not due to alot of nudity like most horror movies). [PS-I also recommend Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation]

Movie Review: Very Refreshing
Summary: 5 Stars

This film may get nothing but horrible reviews from critics, but that's just because it doesn't follow the modern-day Hollywood establishment's rules that a horror film can't possibly be any good if it isn't dreary, complicated, constantly rainy, and if it isn't starring some wierd little kid. House Of 1000 Corpses goes back to that old lunatic idea of horror movies actually being scary. It shows very disturbing visuals and you don't get wrapped up thinking about the story and trying to figure things out because the story is basic and direct. This is every bit as scary as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "The Exorcist". Sor-ry if it isn't the same old boring pointless ghoul flick like "The Ring", "Fear Dot Com", or "Ghost Ship". Hollywood seems to be telling people that if a film doesn't follow the exact formula or mood of those films, then they aren't worth watching. I say that if you're as sick of those films as I am, you'll love House Of 1000 Corpses. I consider it a destined classic. It is scary as hell and the performances in particular of Sid Haig and Bill Mosley are phenomenal. If you're a fan of truely scary horror, do yourself a favor and watch this film. Thanks, Rob Zombie. Horror needs a little more of your genious.

Movie Review: This one really grows on you
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to admit that when I first saw this movie I was a bit disappointed due to the over-hype and anticipation. Not to mention I might be a bit jaded when it comes to horror films having the ability to "scare" me. Either way I bought the DVD and watched it a few times and realized that is just a fun movie to watch while sippin a brew with chips and dip! It has some very cool, colorful and likeable(in a sick way I guess)characters (I do not mean the travelling teenagers; I was happy to see them pass to the afterlife at the HANDS of the interesting characters). I think the insane characters were each solid and stood well on their own and could probably each have a movie made about them individually. The Dr. Satan story was interesting and I liked the way each story within the film merged to a satisfying end. Captain Spaulding is my favorite character in the movie due to his straight-forward approach to everything.
I enjoyed the clips shown throughout the movie which kind of gave a glimpse of back-story and helped progress the plot. The 70's horror feel was nice too. This film was more nostalgic to me than anything else, but worked well for this era. Rob Zombie did a fine job on this film and I am happy to own it! I guess that is all
