Movie Reviews of House of 1,000 Corpses

Movie Review: MUST SEE!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was definitely what I've needed after a long time without a decent horror flick of this variety to be found. As takes place near the beginning of the story, I'd classify the whole of this movie as a wild carnival ride/freakshow. Just when you think it can't get any stranger, it does.

There are some amazing characters in this movie. The dialogue is clever and well written catching this viewer up in the motives and suspicions of everyone involved. The characterisations are probably the most memorable and well done aspect of the movie. I can't figure out why some have had trouble understanding the video style insertions during some of the action sequences. It was obvious to me that they represent internal dialogue or memories -- perhaps in some cases actually recorded on video by the characters at a later time.

Stylistically, this movie is the ultimate. The look and feel of the film is very gritty -- sort of real and unreal at the same time. The film's pacing is hectic yet doesn't seem to skip details. The effects and make-up are spectacular and freakishly sick. The humour is unexpected at times but pulled off in a sly, clever manner. There is plenty of campiness, although the insanity of some of the characters is realistically and frighteningly presented in terms of mannerisms and speech.

The accents are very good and definitely believable. Hollywood hardly ever achieves even a close approximation of the Southern accent.

Story-wise, there are some cheesy moments but, if you get the genre Zombie was aiming at, you'll understand that those moments are exactly what he was wanting. I get the feeling that the unrated DVD will flesh out some of the movie's storyline, especially towards the end. Nothing really 'falls apart' as some critics have claimed but you get the feeling that the censorship was pretty harsh and that there's just a little more story to be 'eeked' out from what was cut.

Overall, I'd say that this is a spectacular first movie for Zombie and I look forward to more of his sick, freakish tales if Hollywood has the sense to back him.

Movie Review: Destined To Be A Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie today actually (May 24th, 2003) for the first time. I downloaded it off the internet, I just couldn't wait another 2 weeks to see it. Now I have seen so many horror movies I can't even recall half of them, and not one has bothered me. But this one did. Its not so much scary as it is sadistic. The way that Rob set this movie up is amazing. It looks and feels a lot like "Texas Chainsaw", it has a similar (very loose but slightly similar) story line about a family in rural Texas (I think it was Texas) that kill people. But the biggest difference-"Chainsaw" was like Sesame Street compared to this. The film starts out on a very light note, with Chris Hardwick (The guy who hosted Singled Out on MTV way back) cracking jokes and making an @ss of himself. But at the half way point, when we see the first murder of the group of kids, the film takes a GIGANTIC turn for the dark. It doesn't even seem like the same movie. I don't think I've seen a movie before that jumps that quickly from one extreme to the next. The way that Rob has the kids tortured is, like I said before, nothing but sadistic. For his first time directing, I think Mr. Zombie did a terrific job. Now I doubt that he'll get to make a sequel, he either won't be aloud or he won't want to due to censorship. As for the actors, Bill Mosley (of Texas Chainsaw 2 fame) plays the most evil character I have ever seen. The way he speaks and acts is frightening. Sherri Moon (Zombie's girlfriend) plays the childish and spooky (for lack of a better word) Baby. She did a real good job. Karen Black plays the Mother of the house. She only kills one person but her character is memorable none the less. As for the "hero's", the four innocent kids, the only one I recognized was Chris Hardwick who did an amazing job. The others were good but nothing to write home about. I suggest that all horror fans see this film, it WILL be a classic and its simply amazing for a horror film. This is the "Godfather" or "Jedi" of the horror genre-people will talk about it for years.

Movie Review: your missing the point
Summary: 5 Stars

I own this movie and was curious to see what other people thought about it, after reading a couple of the reviews on here I noticed somthing, you bad reviewers were missing the point. House of 1000 corpses was not made to have an amazingly captavating story line, or amazingly developed characters, it was made to be exactly the opposite. Anyone that complained about those aspects of the film should go back and re-watch the original texas chainsaw massacre, how well developed were those characters? they weren't, how amazing was the storyline, it wasn't, in fact for about ten minets of the film sally is running through the woods, yet this film is not condemed in fact quite the contrary it is considered one of the greatest horror films ever made. So when you watch this movie and start comparing it's "scares" to films like "the ring" and "the sixth sense" you have completely lost touch with what you are watching in the first place. Go back and compare this great movie to the texas chainsaw massacre or the cult classic "bloodsucking freaks" and then your review will mean somthing of value. This is definetly an amazingly well made addition to the horror greats. And as one reviewer put it "the only reason people love this movie is to be different, even if that means adding this peiece of crap to their dvd collection" Well let me just say this to that person directly... you have no idea what a true horror film is, and just from reading your review I can tell that you are a fan of "the ring" and "the sixth sense" which are in no way even partially good horror films, if you want to see a true horror film watch the classics with a more open mind, the whole point of a horror film is to be vile and disgusting, and anyone that can't understand that should leave this entire genre alone, and that's the TRUTH see this movie if your a horror fan, don't see it if your expecting another "the ring" esque film. Thank you

Movie Review: Rob Zombie has lifted the horror genre from the dead
Summary: 5 Stars

It's extremely hard to describe this movie in words...this movie is just too good. Finnaly there is a horror movie for those of us who appreciate "real" horror movies. I was getting really tired of all the so called horror movies of the past few years..."Scream", "I know what you did last summer", "The Ring", "Darkness Falls"..etc. While some of these had their moments...none gave you the feel of the old classics like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Halloween", or Romero's Dead Trilogy.
"House of 1000 corpses" takes you back to the feel of those films. I honestly can't say enough about this film, and I am extremely impressed with Zombie's skills as a director. His use of light and camera angles was excellent. The only problem is that it is a little "choppy" at times...I assume this is in the parts that contained scenes that had to be cut to get the R rating. Hopefully he will release an unedited or director's cut on DVD soon and I'm sure that will be perfect. All in all, this is an excellent horror film and any true fan of the horror genre will celebrate this return to horror greatness. My only fear is that all the trouble that Rob Zombie had to go through, (and then the fact that they only released on a limited number of screens), will deter Zombie and other potential great horror film makers from messing with actually filming more great horror films like this. I gave it 5 stars..only because the scale doesn't go any higher.....oh...and I didn't even touch on the music and soundtrack. Zombie creates some truely eerie music that really fit the film. Im not a fan of Rob Zombies music by any means (I don't own any of his CD's), but on the way home from the theater, I stopped off and got the soundtrack....I wanted somthing to remember the film by since I can't stay in the theater continuously. 5 stars....2 thumbs up...whatever..just go see this movie!!!!

Movie Review: Rob Zombie Promised and Delivered This Great Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a fan of Rob Zombie for many years now, I was extremely anxious to view his unorthodox and shocking film that had the critics and production studios turning their heads away in disgust. Being military and overseas, I was unfortunately unable to see this film on the silver screen, but jumped eagerly and cautiously at the chance to see it in my own home. I must say that this backwater slasher flick reminds me of the days of old, when movies didn't require well-endowed and well-known actors/actresses to fulfill the roles needed. This movie delivers a disturbing and provocative look into a situation we all dread: Two couples break down on a country road on Halloween Eve while going cross-country trying to write a book on roadside oddities. They are helped buy the hitch-hiking, very beautiful and talented Sheri Moon (Rob Zombie's real-life significant other), but instead of calling AAA she insists that the group come to her country house to visit with her family and let her brother do the handy-work. What lay before them is a house full of inbred, backwater, cheerleader-slashing hillbillies that refuse to let them leave until they fulfill their dark bidding. Sounds very familiar, right (Texas Chainsaw Massacre)? But it doesn't stop there. There's mystery, confused cops, a concerned father, a roadside freak-show attendant, and a local serial mangler known only as Dr. Satan, who is known for his dark and evil experiments on the mentally ill. This movie also has the talent of Sid Haig as the foul-mouthed clown, Captain Spaulding, and also the talent of Karen Black, playing the mother of the sadistic household, Madame Firefly. To those of you with real taste in cult horror films, you will be thoroughly pleased with Rob Zombie's masterpiece, and with the ending that only we could expect from the genius himself. For everyone else....go watch a Scream movie.
