Movie Reviews of House of 1,000 CorpsesMovie Review: If you're a serious horror freak THIS IS A MUST SEE!!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are one to base your decisions by what newspapers/critics say then obviously you are the type of person who should sit home rent your 'I know what you did last summer' flick and then tell everyone that it was the best horror movie ever. In other words you are a person who has no taste and appreciation of real horror/gore. Anyway 'House of a 1000 Corpses' has been delayed for close to 2 [] years until Lion Gate ent. came forward and spit in the face of the stupid past distributors. This marks the directorial debut of musician/genius Rob Zombie. If you have never heard of him then you listen to [bad] music and probably live in a hole. This movie is amazing. Simply put. When I go to a movie I want to be entertained. If it's a comedy then I expect to laugh, or at least hope to. Same goes when it comes to horror. This movie borrows a little from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Alice in Wonderland' (ending part, in tunnel), and some others. Too many [people] want to make critical comments about this movie, blah, blah. IT'S A HORROR MOVIE FOLKS NOT [] GONE WITH THE WIND HERE, GIVE THE GUY A BREAK!!! The movie captures the essence of all those good ole' fashion horror movies; messed up family, disturbing images and that their is no 'happy ending' for the innocents. Zombie does some interesting things w/sound, camera angles and this helps to make this original, in some aspect. Case in point: (spoiler alert). When the cop is about to get shot and there is a big delay, before the actual killing, and the sound is turned off, but comes back once the deed is done. Pure genius!! Just put yourself in the cop's shoes. That time before he is killed probably seemed like an eternity to him, hence Zombie captures that emotion perfectly. Few can do that in horror. From what I understand Zombie will actually release a director's cut on dvd. This will have the movie in its origianl gory form, the way he wanted it, but was forced to butcher(no pun intended) it so it could have an actual release. Well the product in theaters is still actually quite violent/gory, but I could tell where the cuts were made. So it will be a blessing to see the movie, in its true intended form, once it comes to dvd. For his first movie Zombie did an amazing job (c'mon people that footage he filmed w/Albert Fish, Ed Gein and Dr. Satan looks pretty damn real, like it was from an 8mm camera-amazing). Doubtful he will make a sequel, one can only hope. However I cannot wait for his next movie-he has quite an imagination. Go see this if you are a real hardcore horror fan-you will not be disappointed!!
Movie Review: House of 1000 Corpses Summary: 5 Stars
No wonder MGM and Universal did not dare touch this.
It's utterly brilliant.
Being a fan of Rob Zombie's music, it's really easy to find his influences. Horror Films, Comic Books, it's all in there. And he does it right. Every time I've ever seen a music video or heard a song by him, I know the man knows his stuff, and is a true fan of the genres he's going for. How many videos go for the look and style of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari? Or how many songs are there about Herman Munster's car? Not many. Which is why I always liked Rob Zombie, he's a true fan of the classic Horror Film, and all it's little twists and turns.
This film eats alive any horror movie released in the last 10 years, barring the first 3 installments of the Hellraiser series. When compared to the multitude of mainstream Horror movies post Scream, they are all generic, safe, and usually far less scarier than their original source. Take the remake of The Haunting, starring Catherine Zeta Jones. It bears little similarity to the original 1963 The Haunting, and is totally sapped of any creepiness or horror that was within that original black & white horror classic. The Haunting from 1963 is truly a creepy film, and one thing they understood back in the day is LET THE PERSON'S IMAGINATION DO THE WORK. You don't have to telegraph every 'scare' that is going to come up. Ever since John Carpenter's Halloween, Hollywood has churned out Horrormatic movies. Everything's on automatic, play music to show something's going to happen, do tight shots to show someone's going to get killed, it's all mass produced, with each one lessening the actual horror it's trying to bring across. 13 Ghosts, House on Haunted Hill, have all been poor efforts. Even the US/Canada version 'The Ring' missed the point.
House of 1000 Corpses is truly a modern masterpiece of Horror. With plenty of hommages within it to the classic days of true horror films. The movie comes across like a ''spot the reference'', but in no way does it subtract from the fact that this is a very disturbing, creepy, and relentless horror vision. It gave me hope that the whole Horror genre isn't dead, immersed in commercialised, saccharine versions of its once former glory.
Kudos to you Mr. Zombie. You made an outstanding film, full of glimpses of what made Horror great in the first place. Carnival of Souls, Night of the Living Dead, a little Kubrick, and plenty more are the foundation of a great Horror film anyway. Brilliant movie, highly recommended.
Movie Review: A stylish haunted house ride Summary: 5 Stars
This movie can't really be appreciated by the youngsters who are looking for sheer gore. They won't understand the intent like we old fogies will. This movie is a fond look back at the horror styles of past decades. It's also a tour-de-force for Rob Zombie as he shows what he's capable of in cinematography. Frankly, I didn't know he had this much moviemaking talent in him.
Those of us who have aged to the point where good cinematic technique is much more important than sheer explicit gore will love this movie. It's loaded with great technique from start to finish. Some will say that Zombie was much too caught up with displaying technique to provide us with any real horror or suspense. I can understand this criticism. Some will say it doesn't have much of a plot. Watching these characters and situations, we get the feeling we've seen it all before. But that's the point! Some may call this a derivative rip-off of the old horror B movies, while others will call it a loving tribute to them. I'm definitely with the tribute crowd. I grew up with those old movies, just like Zombie did. He's honoring them, even as he's showing off his own moviemaking abilities. There's very little explicit gore in this movie. It doesn't live up to it's tag line, just as the old B movies didn't. Horror is portrayed more through the dandy retro props and scenery. Technique is what mattered here, and this movie is overflowing with it.
Let me acknowledge the crew. The movie's editors deserve lots of credit for making Zombie's stylishness come through so effectively. The casting was great all around. Sid Haig and Bill Moseley were given a script that let them chew up the scenery, to great affect. So Sheri Moon is Zombie's wife? Boy, am I jealous! And that Karen Black--what an ageless beauty!
So many great old horror B movies flashed through my mind as I watched this. Zombie blended the styles of the various decades' movies artfully. The creators of those old movies are looking down from horror movie heaven and smiling. Don't worry about the lack of an original plot or suspense here. The predictableness was all part of what Zombie had set out to accomplish. He let his stylish technique shine forth brilliantly. I'm sure the substance, horror and suspense you're looking for will be seen in his later movies. We have much to look forward to.
Movie Review: One of My Favorite Horror Movies! Summary: 5 Stars
After reading all the bad reviews for this film, I feel compelled to write my own review praising Rob Zombie's debut: House of 1000 Corpses. I actually never heard of this movie until my girlfriend bought it for me as a gift. I am a huge horror fan and I've seen hundreds of horror movies, so you might say that it is difficult to impress me. Nevertheless, I have to say that I absolutely loved this film, and although I'm in the minority, I actually prefer this film over the Devil's Rejects. It is disgusting, repulsive, satanic, and it's imagery, visceral images, and memorable characters stay with you long after the film ends. Gotta love that Captain Spaulding.
Why is this movie so great? Because Zombie holds nothing back. As other reviewers mentioned, this film is a throw back to classic 1970 slasher flicks like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't know which family is worse, the TCM Family or the Firefly's? Both movies are equally gruesome. The great thing about this film is everytime you think things can't get worse, they do times 100. What starts off of simple torture/kidnapping turns into satanic rituals, which then turns into underground catacombs and demons. The movie never lets up, not for a second, which is why I prefer it to the Devil's Rejects.
I think a lot of people hate on this movie because it's simply not for the faint hearted. I know that I've tried watching this movie with my friends on several occasions and they almost always can't make it through the entire film. The reson being it is so intense and gory. But in my opinion, that's what makes the film so great. You should squirm in your chair and you should be horrified when you watch a horror movie, and House of 1000 Corpses does just that, it horrifies the viewer. This, combined with the great cast of characters and Zombie's psychotic imagery, makes for a great horror flick.
In closing, alot of people will say in their reviews that "this movie sucks, it's terrible", but most people feel this way because they can't handle this type of horror movie. If thats the case, go rent Scream or The Sixth Sense. But if you are like me and you like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and THe Hills Have Eyes, this is a must see!
Movie Review: first successful merging of the European and American styles Summary: 5 Stars
I've seen this film 5 times so far in the theatre, and already have a copy that's been bootlegged only because I will so be buying this anyway- I just want an R rated print to put next to this unrated cut that I hear is coming out (some of the cheerleader stuff will be changed and rumor has it that 40 minutes or so has been excised; leading me to believe that some of that NBK montagey stuff might well be padding... and some nice padding at that, no offense). So I'm all primed up for a sequel and I'm waiting to see "The Cornbugs" albums take off -will be ordering as soon as possible- if ya don't know, lookit up!! To me, worth the four year wait... right now we couldn't have used it more. Everyone in the theater the last time I went had already seen it a few times and we passed around marshmellow bunnies to shred apart everytime one of the kiddies got whacked!!(note: this could bring back midnight programming with a vengeance) But honestly, this is the only time I've ever seen the Americana Redneck killer style has been merged with the more European "fantastique style"- for more about that check out "Immoral Tales" by Cahill and Toombs. It was the balances in the mood and visuals that counted here, not the plot. Also kudos to Rob for creating a genuine sense of 70s- like the 8 tracks in the rear window and the scifi references from the kids... I remember this all too well. Good God, it even comes with a host!! I've been hearing so much bad things about the movie I had to tell you I LOVE this flick!! ALSO- you people who keep saying it's just like Chainsaw had ought to be ashamed -the girl in the basmement's dress is from Mother's Day, the girls in the cage are from Bloodsucking Freaks, the casket going into an underground zombie place (no, I'm not ruining it) is from Fulci's Gates of Hell, and if you wanna get nuts you can say it's all Alice in Wonderland with the hole in the ground, Otis as the White Rabbit, Spaulding as the Mad Hatter, and Earl as the Red Queen. So there... by the way, groovy soundtrack too (music is mah life!!!ha ha): my grandmother used to tool around the house to that Slim Whitman song!!!!!
