Movie Reviews of House, M.D.: Season OneMovie Review: An essential season - as they all have been Summary: 5 Stars
This is a show that hit the starting gate running at full speed and quickly found its pace - so all seasons of House MD so far are worth getting - even Season One - many shows that are successful still have fairly weak season one box sets but House MD is not one of them. I write this brief review to those who already love House and wonder what storylines are on which season. Season One hit the ground running - even the pilot is good. Much of the first season was involved in the unusual medical cases that was the premise for the series - but this first season was also the first case of "House vs Authority" as Vogler buys his way into the scheme of things with big bucks and House fights back in great style (an all time classic is here as House plays along with the Who in his mind as Vogler walks in and cuts the music off)- again I write this with the hope it will be helpful to those that want to find which season the great House story lines were written. Of all of the seasons - some of House's funniest ER sessions are here - this season had the Mob episode and the "Three Stories" episode with House teaching a class to avoid ER duty and was one of the first episodes to go into the more bizarre story lines - man bitten by rattlesnake or not etc the class constantly killing their patient- the team in bizarre situations in House's mind- on the negative side - bonus material is so-so - this season has double sided DVDs which are annoying - no informative booklet or whatnot so packaging gets a C- but I still give it 5 stars because this is a series that has not lost its way or jumped the shark yet (flirted with it when they tried the Cuddy romance in season 5 but that's another story - anyway it WAS the Vicodin). Hugh Laurie is a riot and if you can tolerate British humor (I say this with a smile) his BBC comedy stuff is also worth an Amazon search and is a great indicator of how well he can adapt his style from near slapstick British comedy to drama. Highly recommend all seasons of House MD.
Movie Review: Marvelous Summary: 5 Stars
My god, I love this show.
If you've read any of the other reviews, you already know what it's about. Be forewarned, it doesn't reinvent the wheel. Each episode follows a formula and has a pretty clear theme to it. The forumla works, though, and it follows a pretty logical progression: people go to a hospital because they are not well. Dr. House senses something amiss in each episode's particular patient that no one else notices (because he's the best) and their condition worsens. There's trial and then error until an answer is found. Sound familiar? Yeah, that's how medical cases tend to work outside of TV as well. The difference is, in House, people learn life lessons along the way that are passed on to the viewer.
The writing is very entertaining. It's not the most subtle wit - life would be frustrating if everyone spoke like in Deadwood - but it's leagues above shows like Smallville. You will laugh and, hopefully, you will feel little rips in your heart in a few of the more touching episodes. Overall, it's very sardonic, honest, funny and dramatic.
The acting is truly top notch. The main character, Dr. Gregory House, is superhumanly good at what he does and subhumanly offensive at times, but that only matters because Hugh Laurie does such a fantastic job of portaying him. Take as a testament to his skill some of the lower score reviews that lambast the character as being rude and offensive. If all you want is a nice, safe, warm and fuzzy show where everyone "good" is likeable and the main characters get along, go elsewhere. The characters in House are, though not entirely realistic, not paragons of virtue. The actors all let the characters' flaws shine through as well as most other shows polish and groom their stories for simple minded family viewing, so much so that some viewers are rubbed the wrong way. Could bad actors do that? Besides, crass, offensive pricks need some sort of syndicated representation too, right?
Movie Review: House M.D.: best medical drama in years makes for addictive TV Summary: 5 Stars
After ER, Chicago Hope, and dozens of other medical dramas, how many really good stories could be left? Turns out, quite a few if done in the right way with an excellent cast. House M.D. breathes new life into the hospital drama by adding a dash of CSI type sleuthing with a stellar cast, led by Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House and also starring Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, and Robert Sean Leonard.
Dr. Gregory House is an incredibly unusual doctor. He dislikes patients, is partially crippled by a muscular disorder, pops Vicodin like they are tic-tacs, and is addicted to reruns of General Hospital. He would rather read a medical journal or hide out in the OB/GYN lounge than deal with a patient. His true purpose in life is leading a team of young doctors in diagnosing the usually rare and fatal maladies that baffle most doctors. Here House is part Sherlock Holmes and part Gil Grissom. He assembles the puzzle, often failing to get the pieces right, until finally the solution is arrived at. In the meantime he runs rampant across the hospital, badgering or simply bullying his way into getting what he needs to try and help the patient. His bedside manner is not pleasant, in fact House is a jerk because being a jerk is the fastest way to get patients healthy.
Besides trying to diagnose diseases that would baffle Doogie Howser, he is forced by the hospital adminstrator to treat patients during free clinic hours, a fate which to House is akin to death. He hates patients, who he believes are by nature liars, but having to deal with them face to face allows a slightly softer side to House to shine and also give the show some needed humor amidst the darkness.
The writing is fresh, original, and inspired, but the show is truly brilliant thanks to the incredible acting of Laurie. If you like your doctors warm and cuddly, then House may not be for you. But if you give this show 2 episodes, you will be hooked on it like House is hooked on Vicodin.
Movie Review: HOUSE IS THE MOST BRILLIANTLY INTELLIGENT AND FUNNY PROGRAM ON THE TELLY! WATCH IT NOW!!! Summary: 5 Stars
House MD is THE most brilliant show on television. It is a beautiful, magnificent amalgam of inspired writing and convincing acting...this show manages to fuse medical drama with concern for the characters as well, which is so superbly displayed by the acting talents on the show. I mean, I was crying whilst watching the first season's finale...crying! Aah...it was soo beautifully acted by Mr Hugh Laurie...who's American accent is very good. And I love watching House (Laurie) and Wilson (Leonard) on screen together; their banter is so subtle, so funny, so wonderfully intelligent. The whiteboard moments where they're brainstorming ideas or the scenes where they all walk down the corridors with the three "ducklings" shoot out a whole myriad of extremely large medical terms...are all firm House favourites in my mind.
As well as the venerable Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard plays James Wilson, House's best friend and world-renowned oncologist, and Leonard is a subtle force in the show, being accredited with the best one liners. Then there are Omar Epps, Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison, all of whom add a different element to the show. Foreman (Epps) and House share mutual respect but also a mutual dislike to some extent, the is it-or-isn't it relationship between Cameron (Morrison) and House is wonderfully bittersweet to watch, and the similarities between Chase (Spencer - with his lovely aussie accent...*sighs happily*) and House are sure to lead to some commotion soon enough...with the added interest of Cameron...gonna be good people! Finally there is Lisa Edelstein, Head of Medicine Lisa Cuddy, who House teases mercilessly and yet who also saves his ass (as you americans say :P) a few times as well. Even the music is wickd. This show is just WICKD (i'm seventeen and if i say something's 'wickd', it is truely fantastic). Sadly I can't buy the dvds yet, as I live in the UK, but YOU CAN DAMIT! SO BLOODY WELL BUY IT!
Movie Review: Love the show's humour and music but WHERE ARE THE NURSES? Summary: 5 Stars
I have not regularly watched a TV show since childhood the early 70's.(Friday nights,Brady's Partridge's etc), but I am totally addicted to this show. I actually watched my first episode during a recent hospitalization and upon discharge I immediately ordered Season One for my mom and myself as we both love maverick characters like House.
I like Hugh Laurie's characterization of House. First of all he is charasmatic and handsome, but in a real way. For example he does not have those annoyingly white teeth and supertoned bodies of many younger male actors. His appeal goes deeper than that. There is definitely chemistry between House, Dr. Cuddy and his ex Stacy. I don't sense the same type of chemistry between him and Dr.Cameron. One minor criticism of the show is that a young intelligent doctor like Allison Cameron would so obviously show romantic interest in a boss.
I have been a critical care RN on a telemetry floor for almost twenty years (night shift) which brings me to my next criticism. WHERE ARE ALL THE NURSES? I'm not saying they need a nurse as a major character since it is a show about physicians, but nurses make things run in any hospital on a day to day basis. For example during a code when a physician calls for a drug (lets say a bottle of heparin), it is most likely the patients primary nurse who finds the drug or orders it from pharmacy, primes the tubing with the drug, finds a spare IVAC or pump to run the drug through and administers the drug to the patient. Most doctors never draw blood or insert IV's.They never ever transport patients to tests, athough I have had a few come along for the ride.
Other than my above mentioned, hopefully not too picky criticism, I love this show and each episode moves me in a different way. I also enjoy the classic rock music and references to groups like the Stones and Pink Floyd, something I never expected to find in a modern TV show.
