Movie Reviews of House, M.D.: Season FiveMovie Review: True, interesting, though-provoking... Summary: 5 Stars
I agree with what Laurie said in the preview on this page. These words, as well as funny, creative, fresh, and dramatically poignant are what this show brings to me from week-to-week. And this season was no exception. It's not a mere procedural, which are a dime-a-dozen on TV, but also a character study on a fascinating and unique, intelligent character with an interesting, pragmatic way of looking at things, and an acerbic wit. It's about his passion for puzzles and medicine and his life and search for answers, for truth, and how he deals with his life as a man with chronic pain. And it's about how he effects the lives around him: the lives of his (very cool and funny)best friend, Wilson, his only other friend and (very beautiful and equally funny)love interest, Cuddy, and the lives of the doctors who work with him; the old ducklings-Foreman, Cameron & Chase, and the new-Taub and Thirteen. All of these supplemental characters are interesting in and of themselves. The aforementioned characters have many fan-bases that are, as Jacobs stated, passionate. This is so because Shore is great at making original characters. And they really are *all* interesting. I truly like every single one of them. Although, my personal favorites are House, Cuddy and Wilson.
The show has a great production quality, from wardrobe to lighting to set design, to directing and editing, and especially writing and acting. It is rare to find shows that are equally good at comedy and drama but because of its excellent stable of writers, this show is more than up to the task.
This is also a must get if you want to understand where the show (true to form)is starting off with what looks like an original, different and great season six premiere. The story, House's story is still intriguing and must-see-TV for me. David Shore is a great story-teller, with a good sense for what is compelling to his audience, while still remaining true to the characters and show he created.
There's a reason why it's Fox's top scripted show. Watch it and find out for yourself what all the fuss is about.
Movie Review: House makes NO medical sense, but is sensational Summary: 5 Stars
I have been watching the series for 6 months on USA channel. Although, as a physician, I know that the presentation is totally ficticious from a real medical standpoint, this series is very entertaining. It is impossible for someone to destroy their liver in two hours, and to need (and receive) a heart transplant within one day. It is impossible for a physician to treat a patient with whole body radiation without knowing a real diagnosis. However, this series presents medical syndromes, and other very rare disease possibilities, causing even the most astute phyisician to do a double take as to what is involved with the syndrome they present. This is a seriously sensationalistic medical presentation, but still very entertaining...even to the most discerning of physicians. Please do not take the sense of urgency seriously. However, understand that this is a good emotional representation of what physicians go through in trying to make a serious diagnosis, and a diagnosis in difficult diseases can be extremely difficult. It is obvious that "House" is a modern day version of Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes", but "Sherlock Holmes" was patterned after Dr. Joseph Bell, a famous physician in Europe in the time of Doyle.
"Dr. Bell observed the way a person moved. The walk of a sailor varied vastly from that of a solider. If he identified a person as a sailor he would look for any tattoos that might assist him in knowing where their travels had taken them. He trained himself to listen for small differences in his patient's accents to help him identify where they were from. Bell studied the hands of his patients because calluses or other marks could help him determine their occupation." The Chronicles of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
So, "House" takes this full circle. Very entertaining and worth the time, just to refresh rare syndromes and their symptons and the character interactions are also fun.
Movie Review: House Great & Changes Made Were Necessary Summary: 5 Stars
Far from going downhill, I think HOUSE made some difficult choices in its melange of characters and those choices were correct to make. First and foremost, Cameron and Chase were weak characters played by weak actors. They have been all but completely pushed off the show and they should be. They have been replaced by much stronger actors, especially the incredibly strong actors Peter Jacobson and Kal Penn as supporting doctors. The already strong characters (played by strong actors) of Foreman, Cuddy and Wilson remain, with bolder roles than ever. Of course, they are all dominated and eclipsed by Hugh Laurie as HOUSE himself. For anyone who has been living in a cave without a tv for the last 5 years, HOUSE is a series tv show about one of the top internists in the world who correctly diagnoses just about every freak medical condition which exists. He is played by British actor Hugh Laurie who is incredibly convincing as an American. I watched Hugh Laurie on British tv in his earlier shows, especially with Stephen Fry, and HOUSE is as opposite a role from those as one could imagine. HOUSE functions like the modern day incarnation of Arthur Conan Doyle's twin inspirations, his medical mentor and professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, also a premier diagnostician, plus his literary creation, detective Sherlock Holmes. HOUSE has all the same off putting social characteristics as Holmes plus he is likewise musical and a drug addict (pain killers). Wilson, the oncologist in the same hospital, is as close to a Watson as HOUSE can find. He is the only one who long term puts up with HOUSE as a friend. There are lots of surprises in this season which I cannot mention because they would be terrible spoilers. I will say the ending this time is the very best one the show has ever done and is totally fitting for the way the character HOUSE has been developed. I am waiting eagerly for season 6.
Movie Review: Still amazing... Summary: 5 Stars
House MD season five is not like seasons 1-3. The last two seasons have been different; a new cast has come into the fold, and Cameron and Chase have become guest stars at best. But, the show is called House, and despite what others will say, this is one of the best (if not the best) seasons of House. Sure, it has had a few relationships. But, why wouldn't it? This show is not just starting. It's been on for five seasons. It's been known from the very beginning that House and Cuddy have chemistry, and finally they are seeing where it leads. I say finally because it was inevitable.
Such phrases as "jump the shark" or "a broken House" are floating around, but do not believe them. Adamant fans of the show know that House has always been a show to take chances and hope the viewers come along for the ride. All this show has continued to do is take chances, and hope the viewers come along. Such as "Last Resort" in which the hospital is taken hostage, or "Locked In" where most of the perspective is in a blur and from the patient's point of view, or the latest "Simple Explanation" which may possibly be the best episode House has ever produced. Some say House is broken because it isn't what it used to be. And no, it isn't what it used to be. In many ways it's better.
This season has been about self exploration, and House's drive to change. This season has been about growth in our favorite damaged Doc. I write this review with the season not yet being done. There are still four episodes to go, but I can easily say that this show is still as amazing (if not even more so) than before. Do yourself a favor... buy season five of House... you will not be disappointed.
Movie Review: STILL GREAT AND VERY ENTERTAINING Summary: 5 Stars
To all of those negative reviewers, you guys need to stop over-analyzing and nitt-picking everything. It's still a great show and season 5 definitely delivers. House is still one of the best shows currently on t.v (my #1 favorite).
The DVD set is ok but i would have liked more extras. I'm currently watching my way through it in preperation for season #6. Yes, Season 5, in terms of ratings, was not as high as the last couple seasons (in the U.S), but keep in mind it still has a very high rating, and it's also currently ranked #1 as the highest rated/most watched show in the world.
I enjoyed watching this season as much as all the other seasons. As long as Hugh Laurie is there, it doesn't matter what cast members they keep adding and losing, the show will continue to be great.
If you haven't already, please buy season 5, such a low price on amazon. And for anyone new to this show, you have to check it out. Get caught up with the show by watching the first four seasons and this one. (i recommend you get the seasons 1-5 box set) I guarantee it will be one of the best show you've ever seen, and you don't have to be into medical dramas. It's amazing how smart and thought out this show is, and the writing is AMAZING. It has this movie feel to it in terms of how well it is thought out and executed. Very dramatic/funny/smart/entertaining. PLEASE CHECK IT OUT.
I think season 6 is going to be great (new things, greater writing, entertaining, higher rating).
