Movie Reviews of Hot Dog...The Movie

Movie Review: Behind the Scenes Extra
Summary: 5 Stars

I was mildly surprised by the good rating since this type of movie is usually dismissed as "Drive-in Movie" fare no matter how bad or entertaining it is. All reviews were good at on that point.

I was an "Extra" on the set and have a few details of that time.
One of the MAJOR improvements of the DVD over tapes has been almost all dvd are Wide-Screen. Tapes you were lucky to find WS even if you special-ordered. I despise the butchering of films that is so common. I swear some TV stations must think theyre "creative" while chopping the movie they lacerated and showed last week Arghh dont get me started...

Another good thing about dvd is the deleted scenes.
There was a bar fight filmed in the bar where the Wet t-shirt contest is. The bar was The Lone Star and closed after filming.

The winter it was filmed Tahoe had a brutal winter 25+ feet of snow. That was good for filming as it made the "Chinese Downhill" possible. That mountain peak was a cornice called "Red Dog" and out of bounds of the ski runs. No lift went to it I think those skiers climbed up from the backside. (Notice the unbroken snow)I cant remember as I nor almost anyone would venture there as it took EXPERT level.
Those skiers were all Truckee locals and HOT skiers. Couldnt just get stunt men or "Pros" the locals would blow em away anyway

The Jumps were performed by former olympic skiers and was breath-taking to watch. Was a long day of filming though (notice the sidelines are not crowded) Standing all day there was grueling and Extras left to take a break.

The gondolas were known as the "gondoobies" and sadly they were shut down after filming. Since Squaw Valley was built for the Olympics decades before many things were Old.The ice rinks roof had fallen in that year too.
The scene where the freestyle was filmed showed the audience smoking weed was real weed. (Well it smelled real hehe)

As to a sequel? Well money talks and sadly Hot Dog didnt do so well BUT the final scene we filmed was Rudy shaking his fist and vowing revenge in HotDog 2 so a sequel mightve happened if the $$ rolled in.
Movie making is like drilling for oil though even if you do everything right theres no guarantee of success.

Thats about all I can say for now .

Movie Review: Howling good fun!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Movie that made me WANT to be a Skier!! I love this Movie!! Is it Oscarworthy? Not even close. But for just good escapist fun, there are not many movies that are better than this one. Yes, it is far more likely to appeal to Guys than Gals due to the T&A component. But, there is also some substance here in the Movie in the Skiing sequences. The Producers were smart enough to use real skiers to do the skiing sequences and the skiers they got were GREAT!! After you see it, who will ever forget Robbie Huntoon's stunt of skiing through the Lodge at the end of the "Chinese Downhill". The Movie now comes across as dated in lot of ways, it is VERY early 80's!! From the Music to the Ski Equipment, to even the Sport of Freestyle Skiing. Whatever did happen to Ballet Skiing anyway? However, our Freeriders of today will enjoy the Aerial Competition, (Handled by Skier Jeff Chumas), and they will be amazed at how different Mogul Skiing is now compared to then.

Then there is the party hardy aspect to what is happening. Having been a Professional Ski Bum at one point in my life, (not too far after Hot Dog came out), I can tell you they got the partying side of skiing RIGHT!!!

David Naughton does a terrific job in this movie. He also does much of the singing of the original songs that you hear in this movie. My favorite is "When you were mine". "American Werewolf in London" is a CLASSIC and in it's own way so is "Hot Dog the Movie".

I will tell you that if you are a Skier, and loved the wild raunchy side of the 80's this is a great Movie for you. If you like movies like "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks, you will love this movie.

It is what it is and to me "Hot Dog the Movie" is worth seeing ANYTIME!!!

Movie Review: Stay out of zee middle...
Summary: 5 Stars

Did you ever own white Vuarnets? Are you stoked that padded ski sweaters are coming back in? Did you ever want to be the toast of Tahoe, ski all season long, party every night and hang out with a wacky bunch of ski bums with names like "Thrasher" and "Squirrel?" Then check out this early 80's classic (I know, it came out in '84, but it's SO '82). Harkin Banks is the wunderkind from the sticks who hooks up with Dan O'Callahan, the good time Squaw Valley veteran who's a permanent fixture on the competitive ski scene, sharing slopes and hot tubs with his party hardy co-horts: the nutty Squirrel Murphy, who digs zinc oxide, sexy ski bunnies and long gondola rides; Kendo Yamamoto, who doesn't speak much English, but can tear down the mountain like a Kamakaze; Thrasher, the punk rocker who dances to his own tune, even at parties; and a host of semi-nameless others. And what would a crazy party flick be without some bad guys? Enter Rudy Garmisch, zee Austrian ski champ and nemesis of the Squaw Valley locals. He and his loyal "Rudettes", also from zee Austrian slopes, push some of the locals out of the upcoming competition with promises of good television ratings and new sponsorships from internationally minded companies. Uh-oh! Dan's not happy with that at all...and the battle begins. Not to worry, all's well that ends well. After all, what tiff can't be settled over a friendly game of Chinese Downhill? Not sure you wanna play? No worries...perhaps you'd enjoy one of Dan's famous "Leg Spreader" cocktails. And to top it all off, there's some fantastic ski footage set to even more fantastic early 80's synth music. Buy this movie...the gondola at Squaw will never be the same.

Movie Review: What can I say about this movie...?
Summary: 5 Stars

I am embarassed to say (and don't tell anyone!), it was AWESOME! No, it was not a masterpiece in the sense that critics would rate it that (but come on, be honest, how many "masterpieces" actually were we really able to honestly enjoy? The Oscar winners always are the "artsy-fartsy" movies anyhow). This show was typical 80's fun, over-the-top, raunchy, you name it. Movies like this defined that decade and that is why so many people still enjoy the 80's music/movies today. You can't pay anyone to recreate this kind of feeling or duplicate it. The main premise is a young skier dreams of winning big and goes head-to-head with an established, big-ego star skier. The show had some cheap production values it is true (seeing in in the theater when it debuted in widescreen--remember seeing the boom in the shot numerous times, or when the camera followed the skiers downhill and you could at times see the microphone or the top of the gondola the cameraman was riding in? Sadly, it isn't noticeable in the pan-and-scan DVD version). The actors weren't great talents, that is proven by their lack of credits after this movie aired. But they were great in these roles. Tracy N. Smith was adorable as the tough-yet-sexy hitchhiker. Too bad she didn't do more roles, as I think with the right encouragement and role, she could've went on to prove and develop her talent. It was just fun. Get this on DVD, sit down with your favorite snack, and be prepared to laugh you a** off for an hour and a half. For those old enough to remember the 80's, go back to that time and relive the feeling of that decade, and those too young, get a small slice of the fun in a time when being cheesy was actually pretty cool.

Movie Review: The real deal
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the real deal. This is a lifestyle movie, a period movie, a feel-good movie, an escapist fantasy, and a hard nosed dose of reality.
The extensive nudity was was gratuitous and exploitive when the movie was a current release, and is still gratuitous and exploitive today. Because of this responsible adults won't promote the movie to the people who would otherwise benefit most from the movie. Those are early adolescents who need to see adult role models skiing well and skiing responsibly.
That said, it would be a different movie from a different era if any part of it was changed.
This movie is about aspiration, hope, and America's place in the world. Children need to know that if you can ski well you can become the president in this great nation. And what better place to ski well than Squaw Valley, and what better era to ski well in than the early 1980s, and who better to ski well with than Rob Herby, Scott Schmidt and Shannon Tweed.
I am going to check my skis right now (September).
