Movie Reviews of Horror of DraculaMovie Review: IT'S ABOUT TIME! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a Christopher Lee fan for about 45 years, and this is the movie that did it. I was 12 years old when I went to see it and, once he made his first appearance with blood, fangs, etc., I spent much of the rest of the film with my eyes covered. Then, when it ended, I went back to the ticket window and purchased another ticket. This time, forewarned, I watched the whole thing. I had never seen a horror film like it and, as far as I'm concerned, it set the standard for all horror-genre films to come after it. From the realism of the make-up to the lavishness of the sets, Hammer was in a category of its own. I have owned the VHS for many years, and have waited and waited for the DVD. Like the header to this review says, "IT'S ABOUT TIME!"
Movie Review: Hammer Films Original "Dracula" Summary: 5 Stars
"The Horror of Dracula" is one of the most faithful adaptations of Brahm Stoker's original novel. Starring Christopher Lee as Dracula, this film tapped the incredible sensuality of the vampire. The effects are naturally not nearly as good as more modern films but if you want to see a film that really follows both the story and intent of the original novel this is the version of "Dracula" to choose. It was a natural predecessor to the 1979 version of he film that starred Frank Langella, which took the mystery and sensuality of Dracula even further. This film was a bold early step in the direction of the course that vampire films would naturally follow and is still one of the best. It's a must have for any true fan of vampire films.
Movie Review: one of the greatest on-screen duos in their best performance together... Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite film version of "Dracula." Don't get me wrong, I know where it differs from the novel and I am a huge fan of Bela Lugosi's work. However, there's just something great about this movie. Peter Cushing is THE Van Helsing. He plays the part to perfection. And Christopher Lee is very dark and believable as Dracula. This movie, though differing from the novel, stays true enough to the story, has a great gothic atmosphere and is very entertaining. It is the essential Hammer horror in my opinion, and is not to be missed by any fan of horror films. Make sure to check out other Hammer horrors starring these two, including "The Hound of the Baskervilles," "The Curse of Frankenstein," "The Mummy," and so many more.
Movie Review: Best of Lee's Dracula Films Summary: 5 Stars
This is definitely the best Dracula film Christopher Lee starred in and it's his favorite, also. Although it doesn't exactly follow the Bram Stoker novel, it's the closest Hammer comes in its Dracula series. The sets are lush and very colorful and the soundtrack is dark and foreboding. The chemistry between Lee and Cushing is phenomemal! The chemistry may partially come from the fact that Lee and Cushing were good friends for many years in real life, right up until Cushing's death in 1994. "Horror" is a great one for any horror buff to have in their collection and is especially a must to watch during the Halloween season. But oh how I wish they had commentaries by some of the cast and crew to go with the DVD!!
Movie Review: One of the best Dracula films of all time Summary: 5 Stars
I won't write a big review because most everyone has writen what I have to say about this film. It's just great and works on ever level that most all of Hammer's films would. For me Christopher Lee IS Dracula. He looks scary and evil, someone you wouldn't want to meet in the middle of the night on a dark street. I mean Bela Lugosi is great also as the Count, but his Dracula is more gentlemanly and dapper, not the animal that Christopher Lee's Dracula is. Now it's not the best Dracula film ever made ... but this is the best of all Hammer's Dracula films. I just wish that the DVD would have had some extras like it was planed to have had on it.
