Movie Reviews of Horror of Dracula

Movie Review: Hammer Stands Alone
Summary: 5 Stars

Dracula has been through many, many incarnations since Bram Stoker's novel first appeared. Some of them are quite good and some of them are laughable. And after all these years, Hammer Studios' "Horror of Dracula" stands at the top of the pile.

Why? If nothing else, Hammer paid close attention to setting the proper atmosphere for most of its films. The castle, the costumes, the period detail, even the wood of the stakes looks perfect. An impressive fantasy world was constructed with this film, a world that you can get lost in. Add to the package wonderful acting and the presence of two great horror actors Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. (Will we ever see their likes again?) A great package.

Although very tame these days, for the time, the sexual undercurrent of the film was quite daring. Remember, this was 1958. The film-going public was used to films about creatures from the sea, mutant ants, and flying saucers. "Horror of Dracula" really made people sit up and take notice. And it still does. The film also contains one of the most memorable endings in the horror genre. Not to be missed.

Movie Review: Hammer's Ultimate Vampire Classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, two names that would become synonymous with Hammer Studios and the horror genre. A rebirth of classic horror came in the form of "The Curse of Frankenstein," and would continue with scores more. "The Horror of Dracula" is probably the best loved of the Hammer catalogue, due to the strong story line, the great atmosphere, and the superb acting by the entire cast. I agree, `the Horror of Dracula" is a classic gothic horror movie and a treasured film in the Hammer Studios collection. Though Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are excellent in their roles, I must give special mention to Michael Gough (as Jonathan Harker) who also turns in a great performance. This dvd is not only one that you should add to your classic horror collection, but a dvd that every classic horror collector's dvd collection should not be without! Don't any of the other Hammer Horror films on dvd, including the Universal Pictures release of "The Hammer Horror Series" featuring some of Hammer's best! Also Warner Bros box set, "The Hammer Horror Collection," with even more great classics!

Movie Review: Quite Possibly The Best Dracula Film
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a big fan of horror films but I was very impressed with this one. It looks great on DVD, too, and it's tough to beat this price. You get a very good transfer and an excellent film for under seven bucks!

This is a solid re-telling of the Dracula story with some legitimate thrills provided to the viewer along with pretty photography and sets and a tasteful lack of blood.

Story-wise, they might have embellished some of the action scenes and made Dracula a little more powerful. (I can't see him feeling a regular human being which he did here in the end.) Other than that, it's a well-done movie with no exaggerated characters, nice colors.......one of the better Dracula films ever made, just maybe the best. It's that good!

It also features two of the best classic 'horror" actors of all-time: Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. It's highly recommended, particularly for people who might be hesitant to watch a "Dracula" film. I'll think you'll like this version.

Movie Review: Christopher Lee could replace his predecessor Bela Lugosi as Count
Summary: 5 Stars

Christopher Lee could balance and continue his charismatic predecessor Bela Lugosi(1882 - 1956) in the 60's Hammer british Dracula series.

This film is a great example for Lee as Count.

The differences are:
- Lugosi was more a theatrical Dracula from Broadway. Lugosi acted very elegant, exclusive & gentleman as a Dracula star. His charming style becomes a legend.
- Lee is more a mainstream Dracula star. He is not a theatre star like Lugosi did in 1931. He'd prefer a type of cold elegant beast. His style is less charming because he has to accustom himself into various directions in eight Dracula series.

Lugosi played as Dracula three times:
1. Dracula 1931
2. Return of the Vampire 1944
3. Mark of the Vampire 1935

Lee played as Dracula 8 times (see Filmography Imdb)

Frankly Bela Lugosi was a bit more charismatic than Christopher Lee, but Christopher Lee could balance the great charisma of his great predecessor.
