Guess I saw an article about Robert Mitchum in the paper the other day because I find myself with like five of his movies checked out from our library and waiting on top of the tube to be enjoyed. "Home from the HIll" was first.
Anyway,it started a little slowly, but quickly developed into a very moving film where you really cared about the characters and what happened to them-rapscallion father (Mitchum), mother (later Maria's adversary in "The Sound of Music"), son Theron (Hamilton) and--ahem--bastard son Rafe (an unrecognizable but most excellent George Peppard)--all do superb jobs of acting. The ending went an entirely different direction than I expected (an added bonus!!!)and left me satisfied and contemplative.
Movie Review: Mitchum in his prime!

I am a movie buff but for some reason I never saw this movie until I was in my 30's..a terrific movie by any standard. Robert Mitchum WAS in his prime here. This movie and Vincent Minnelli squeezed out excellent performances from Eleanor Parker, George Hamilton and George Peppard. This was some of the earliest performances in Hamilton and Peppards' career. I thought George Peppard nearly stole this movie in his role as Rafe...a great part...for a very entertaining 50's movie.

I love this movie! I loved it so much, I bought the book -- believe me, the movie is better! This is the first time I remember seeing George Peppard in anything. He played Rafe, the illegitimate son, and for me, he was the best! George Hamilton was good as the brooding, mixed-up Theron. If you like steamy dramas, this is the movie for you.
