Movie Reviews of Holiday

Movie Review: Classic Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn black and white
Summary: 4 Stars

Perfect condition film. This is one of my favorite Katherine Hepburn movies. Well written. Funny. Directed by George Cukor. Fast-moving for that time period. I loved it!

Movie Review: great fun
Summary: 4 Stars

this is a great funny and warm comedy and love story, it is one you can see over and over, all the great stars in it and the lines it is all great.

Movie Review: romantic comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

A pleasant if not great romantic comedy with top notch actors and acting. An enjoyable movie worth watching.

Movie Review: Not one of the memorable Grant/Hepburn pairings
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie came as part of the Cary Grant boxed set. So I did not have any expectations for this film, and therefore I was not disappointed with it. But this is just an average entry in the screwball genre, and would probably be forgotten if not for the status of the leading stars.

The anti-establishment theme was fairly common to comedies at this time, although it usually appeared in screwballs.( In my mind this movie is not zany enough to qualify as screwball, but it is certainly a comedy and it has enough laughs to get by.) I think this film takes it "bohemian" attitude a little too seriously, and the film becomes almost preachy ... and trite. Very slow moving and deliberate as it tries to make its point. The romance also feels contrived as neither of the lead characters is very charming.

Of course, there is a top-shelf cast, one of the great directors and some witty dialogue, but the results are rather mediocre.
There is a reason why this film is not remembered as well as "Bringing Up BaBy" or the "Philadelphia Story". It does not measure up as a comedy or romance.

Movie Review: NOT AS GOOD AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD!
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm sure in it's time this was a very good movie, but for me it took forever to get to the inevitable. The film is saved by good performances by Grant and Hepburn, but it's not enough to save this slow moving predictable romance movie. It's easy to love the idea that the young Grant has, of earning enough money to let him take some time off to see what he wants to do with his life as I have always tried to live my life in the same manner. Maybe I've seen so many films that this one just doesn't stand out?

I viewed this movie which was included in a box set with four other Grant pictures, I can only hope I enjoy the other more than this one, but the DVD transfer is very good and there are some interesting extras, so if your a fan look for the Cary Grant Box set.
