Movie Reviews of Holiday

Movie Review: A Jewel in The Crown of the Grant-Hepburn Movies.
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this on PBS and it has had a special place in my heart ever since. ITs based on a Phillip Barry stage play (same guy who wrote the Philadephia story) but I feel the real strength of the film is acting and chemistry between Grant and Hepburn. Yes, Barry was a good playwright...but is it the writing...or the way Katherine Hepburn says "oh my it's the wicked witch and dopey" when her nasty cousin and wife enter the room?
Edward Everett Horton and Jean Dixon are great supporting actors (they play Grant- Johnny Case - 's older college professor friends) and the 'bad guys' are pretty entertaining too. Everything great about what golden age hollywood was is here, and everything I wish that current hollywood would emulate.
A note on this DVD - not a bad, but not the best transfer I have seen. I would be nice to see a 'kino' edition.

Movie Review: They don't make 'em like they used to
Summary: 5 Stars

Movies express a vision of how we see ourselves or how we would like to see ourselves in the time they were made. On the surface, Holiday is a lovely fluff comedy with two of the screen's greatest stars. It is very funny. The acrobatic Hepburn and Grant show off delightfully and, for my money, have a better chemistry than Hepburn and Tracy ever had. That said, there are more serious issues, even if they seem somewhat dreamy and hollywoodilistic (so to speak). Lew Ayers as the weak, drink addicted brother, is very touching. Edward Everett Horton and Ruth Donnelly all but steal the scenes they are in, and social-economic issues are dealt with with a deft and subtle hand. A classic screwball comedy, which should be seen in the context of You Can't Take it With You and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.

Summary: 5 Stars

As leading man, Grant was unequalled, the epitome of charm, and Cukor's "Holiday" finds him in peak form, starring opposite the redoubtable Hepburn in this giddily amusing romantic comedy. Based on Philip Barry's Broadway play, this was the third Grant-Hepburn pairing in as many years, and one of the sauciest, as the young would-be lovers buck the dictates of high society. With excellent supporting work by Lew Ayres as Hepburn's alcoholic brother, and Edward Everett Horton as Grant's bosom friend, "Holiday" is an antic riff on lives of privilege.

Summary: 5 Stars

Cary Grant is a working class man engaged to a daughter from a wealthy family. He doesn't fit in with her stuffy ways but infatuated with her beauty and class. Her sister is Katherine Hepburn, she can't stand her family's stuffing ways and obsession over wealth and class. Will Cary marry the sister? Or will he finally realize that Katherine is his true soulmate?

Movie Review: Cary Grant Movie Rarely Disappoint Me
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie great. As usual Cary Grant was superb. Katherine Hepburn was as well. I loved her character because although she was rich, she was down to earth and liked simple things. As with Cary Grant's character and so with her character money did not mean happiness to them.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who loves Cary Grant.
