Movie Reviews of Holiday

Movie Review: Fine Grant & Hepburn film
Summary: 5 Stars

Being George Cukor the director you can't go wrong. The poster doesn't tell the truth, though. There's no holiday in this movie. It's a very indoors comedy, and one feels it should have some scene outside, at least at the end when the happy couple is supposed to finally board a ship.

The story is very simple and everyone can figure what the end is going to be, though you'll want to know how it's going to come about. Grant and Hepburn are excellent; it's hard to tell who does better. The script writer is the same as in "Philadelphia Story", and does a fine work here too. Now, I wouldn't call this a comedy, although that's what it's supposed to be; if so, this is the saddest comedy I've seen. There's also an exaggeration in the theme about rich people being all empty and sad souls, given to drinking or drugs to fill their emptiness. The film takes it for granted that it's always like that, its point of view is a little manichaean. One would have liked some more specifics about the lives of the characters.

Anyhow, this is a very good film, but not as good as the really great comedies... say "Bringing Up Baby", "Philadelphia Story", or "Ball of Fire", no. Actually these last titles are way above "Holiday".

Movie Review: Classic and Well Balanced
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one of those Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn movies I had never seen and I'm sorry I'd missed it. It is indeed an overlooked classic and considering it is Grant and Hepburn teamed with George Cukor that surprises me. Grant and Hepburn are in great form, each playing into the romantic comedy nature of the picture with full commitment. But don't get me wrong, this isn't some zany, screwball romantic comedy. There is some wonderful depth. When it needs to be charming, it does so brilliantly. When it needs to get a laugh, it does. But underlying it all, there is real human emotion here, and when it needs to turn serious, it does so well and with great ease. So yes, it is a romantic comedy, but it is one that is most often played quite real.

Unsung in this movie also is the magnificent Lew Ayers who I almost didn't recognize. He, together with Hepburn, show us in lovely detail how a life ruled by money can be suffocating and demoralizing. It never gets preachy and it does end with a happily-ever-after, but this really is so much more than a "romance."

Movie Review: oh the hilarity
Summary: 5 Stars

It was always an event with Grant and Hepburn paired.
This is their third film together.
Sylvia Scarlett, while a cult classic many years after the fact, was a terrible failure at the time. A shame, because the performances of it's leads and the great direction from George Cukor (one of old Hollywoods most underrated geniuses) makes it a delight to watch.

Cukor works his magic here as well, working from a Philip Barry play.
Grand and Hepburn are well cast and work well together as always.
The film itself is in parts, hilariously funny. But as with many of Hepburn's films, has that perfect blend of the comedy with drama as well.
The only downfall of the film is the sorry, simpering actress who plays Julia Seton (sister of Hepburn in the film).

But other than that, an excellent supporting cast help make this a classic, and here, in a superb DVD release, it can be enjoyed over and over.

A much recommended classic, in my humble opinion.

Movie Review: Katharine and Cary - Marvelous classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the marvelous Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn films that is extremely enjoyable, but greatly under-rated. Holiday is a classic well worth seeing!
Johnny Case (Cary Grant) is engaged to Julia Seton, daughter of a wealthy banker, who he met on vacation. He plans a wonderful holiday for the two of them, but she doesn't want to go. She wants him to stay and work at her father's bank and go on a honeymoon (or should I say business trip?) that her father has planned out for them. Johnny soon realizes that she isn't the girl he thought she was and that their engagement isn't going to work out. However, he soon finds out that his friendship for Julia's sister, Linda (Katharine Hepburn), has turned into love and she thinks exactly as he does!
This is the movie Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn got to showcase their tumbling/gymnastics skills in! This is definitely a great classic!

Movie Review: One of the best of the 1930's
Summary: 5 Stars

This truly is one of the great classics of the 1930's, on a par with "Dinner at Eight," "The Awful Truth," and Howard Hawk's "Bringing Up Baby." Directed by the great George Cukor, fast-paced, and perfectly cast, with one of the most witty scripts from a great Philip Barry play, it all comes together in one of those cinema gems with few equals. George Cukor is one of my all-time favorite directors. From "Dinner at Eight" in 1933 to "My Fair Lady" in 1964, the genius of this man has created a body of classic films unequaled in my humble opinion. It is my goal to have all of his films on DVD in my film collection.
The marvelous chemistry between Hepburn and Grant would go on to delight generations of film buffs. It is films like these that can shape and influence our lives, in ways positive and uplifting.
Add this one to your collections gang.
