Movie Reviews of Hitman (Unrated Edition)Movie Review: Hitman is a hit. Summary: 4 Stars
Apparently the evil men who run assassination bureaus have not seen any of the 100 or more Bourne-like films that were made in the last 50 years, and hence they send out another team to kill their best man. Thus we find Timothy Olyphant in this 2007 films called "The Hitman" in which a highly skilled assassin is betrayed and hunted by his own organization. The talented Olyphant comes to the role in between doning the sheriff's hat in 2004 for "Deadwood" and again in 2010 for "Justified".
Hitman gives us all the action and fast paced killing that we're accustomed to seeing in films like this. It's directed by relatively unknown Xavier Gens, but its look and feel can perhaps best be explained by looking at the film's producers - famed action director Luc Besson ("The Professional", "The Last Battle", "The Fifth Element", "La Femme Nikita") and action star Vin Diesel ("The Fast and the Furious", "XXX", "The Chronicles of Riddick"). BTW - Diesel was originally scheduled to play the part of the Hitman, and then it was offered to Jason Stratham before Olyphant came on board.
The real treats in "The Hitman" are Olga Kurylenko as the love interest and Dougray Scott as the Interpol agent who is hunting Olyphant.
This was Kurylanko's first American film and she is stunning - sexy, vulnerable, and cute at the same time. Since this film she has appeared in several others including "Quantum of Solace" (2008) and "Centurion" (2010) and played the title role in "The Assassin Next Door" (2009).
Dougray Scott is perhaps best known for his co-starring role in "MI 2" although TV viewers may recognize him from his recurring role as Ian in "Desparate Housewives" (2006-7).
Fans of the betrayed assassin genre will enjoy this film. If you don't like ultra violence, you should probably stay away.
Movie Review: Hitman, should be a hit Summary: 4 Stars
Fans of the Hitman game, the movie "Universal Soldier", or the "Dark Angel" TV series should enjoy this fast moving action movie the most. "Hitman" focuses on a man who from childhood was raised in a school for assassins. We see glimpses throughout much like those glimpses in "Dark Angel" of a militaristic school of children learning to be super soldiers. They aren't even given a name, just a number and a bar code on the back of the head. I did think it odd that all these assassins go though the movie without bald head or bar code covered. It made them easy to spot and hence easier targets than if they grew hair or wore hats or a wig. I only mention this because most spies prefer to keep a low profile and I would think assassins would find that beneficial as well.
Our hero has two things the other graduates don't seem to have, a little compassion and faultless execution. Although his compassion is only a flicker at first it grows as does his interest in a lady that was targeted to be eliminated, but was to be killed for other reasons than truthful ones. Hence he doesn't As our hero investigates instead of executing his orders to kill her, and he saves her instead. The addition of Interpol agents tracking his movements along with the activities of other criminal groups is a nice plus to the overall story. No one said this is Oscar material, but it has plenty of good action and the kind of James Bond type fun that most people will enjoy. Good story, directing, acting, locations, and camera work make this well worth a look. I intend to get a copy myself. Good quality DVD and good replayability. If you enjoyed this catch "Shoot 'Em up" and "Grindhouse Planet Terror". - C. Luster
Movie Review: AN EXCEPTIONAL ACTION FLICK 8.75 OUT OF 10 Summary: 4 Stars
Thankfully these days, movies based on games are turning out to be quite good: Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat, and now Hitman. In fact I can't wait for upcoming films like the next Resident Evil, the Bioshock movie, the Max Payne movie, the Metal Gear Solid movie, the Gears of War movie, and someday the Halo movie. Whoever made this movie mut have really loved the Hitman games, because a lot of love and care went into making this movie.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: A genetically engineered assassin named Agent 47 goes around the world eliminating certain targets like other assassins and politicians by orders of an organization he works for. But when he's double-crossed on an assassination mission in Russia, he's determined to find out who set him up and eliminate the targets while protecting a woman who has ties to his target and trying to avoid capture from his pursuors.
MUSIC: The score in this movie is quite good, and fits well with this film's theme and story.
STORYLINE: Not the best story ever, but it does a fairly good job at pacing and plot twists.
ACTION: Lots of gunplay, lots of blood, and even some sword fighting.
ENTERTAINMENT: This movie is quite good, and definitely worth watching. It has an interesting storyline, awesome action, and great actors. Don't let kids watch it though, this is strictly for adults.
OVERALL: There are a few roughspots in the story, and I did find the sword-fighting scene to be a little cheesy, but this movie is quite good for the most part.
THE GOOD: Lots of blood, lots of gunplay, cool story, good pacing.
THE BAD: Story has some problems, the sword-fighting scene was somewhat cheesy.
Movie Review: Much better than your typical video game movie... Summary: 4 Stars
Hitman is much better than I expected it to be. Most video game to movie adaptations are terrible, neither respecting the source material or providing anything even resembling a watchable movie. Hitman is one of the rare exceptions.
The Hitman games allow the player to kill all sorts of people in all sorts of ways, not just blasting them away but poisoning them and much other assorted nastiness.
The main character, Agent 47, is an assassin who works for a shadowy organization known only as, well, "The Organization". The movie avoids many of the more obvious science fiction bits from the games (i.e. cloning tanks). Timothy Olyphant is great in the main role, with a quiet menace and an occasional hint of humor. The plot follows the usual twists and turns of a Bourne-ish movie, with chases and shootouts and some more chases and a few dozen explosions thrown in the mix. The ending is a little less conclusive than I would have liked, probably to make room for a potential sequel. Sigh. Just like a video game...
The level of violence is quite high and there is a lot of blood, but it's all a little bit over the top so it's not too grotesque or realistic. Some of the cinematography is quite stunning, with nice slow motion shots and interesting camera angles. While it's not exactly great film making or high art by any means, it kept me entertained for an hour and a half.
Movie Review: it hits with me Summary: 4 Stars
Hitman was an enjoyable movie with references throughout towards to the video game series on which it is based on. They picked a good one (Timothy Olyphant-Scream 2, Live Free or Die Hard) to play the title character and he does so with style but also a fierceness as well. He dispatches any and all that come his way or end up and his already dead marks. From hand to hand combat, guns, sword fights with others like him from the Organization that trained, fed, clothed and made them into the powerful yet deadly freelance agents they are.
It is touched on his background with the organization but hope it might be expanded on in a future movie. Entertaining, action packed and loaded with violence add a little bit of storyline and you have a fun and far more entertaining movie than i thought it could be. Usually i'm not too hyped over video games made into movies, but Hitman isn't like that at all.
Very enjoyable.
