Movie Reviews of Hitler - The Rise of Evil

Movie Review: Surprisingly well done!
Summary: 5 Stars

Hitler: The Rise of Evil is a three-hour mini-series that originally aired on CBS in May 2003, currently available on DVD. It opens with a handful of brief vignettes of Hitler's childhood and quickly moves to his years as a penniless street artist in Vienna, a soldier in the First World War, his rise to power within the National Socialist Party in Munich, and ends with his appointment to chancellor and assumption of the presidency upon Hindenburg's death.

I popped in the DVD with low expectations, but was struck immediately by the high production values and quality acting talent on display. Robert Carlyle is frighteningly good in the title role, demonstrating both the overwhelming confidence and madness that Hitler must have possessed. Carlyle's eyes are particularly haunting, appearing at times to be impossibly black and demonic, while at other times blue and cherubic.

Some have complained of blatant historical inaccuracies in the film. For instance, an early scene shows Hitler beating a dog for not obeying his commands, but the consensus among historians appears to be that Hitler was a dog-lover and that no account exists of him ever harming a (non-human) animal. However, taken at face value as a dramatized account of Hitler's rise to power, this one sets the bar high. I hope someone rises to the challenge with a sequel following Hitler through the War and his final days in the bunker.

Movie Review: A Brillant Production On The Rise Of Adolph Hitler.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hitler, The Rise Of Evil is probably one of the best cinematic productions ever made on the beginning years of the 20th centuries most evil dictator. Actor Robert Carlyle does a fantastic job of portraying Adolph Hitler and his struggle to become the leader of Germany from his time as a corporal during the first World War up until his complete takeover of the German Government in 1933. Although Carlyle's physical features hardly resemble those of the actual Hitler, his superb acting more then makes up for that. All of the supporting cast are excellent in their individual character portrayal's as well, including veteran actor Matthew Modine who plays a concerned newspaper reporter that trys to warn the public of the potential danger from Hitler and of course Peter O "Toole who plays President Von Hindenburg. Besides Carlyle's great acting, what I also liked about this movie is the producer's penchant to detail and the authenticity of the background. Kinda make's you feel like you are really in 1920s Germany during the rise of the Third Reich. For anyone who has a keen interest in the early years of the world's worst mass murderer, then I highly recommend watching Hitler, The Rise Of Evil.

Movie Review: Hitler was the greatest speaker, Robert Carlyle playing Hitler makes it seem real!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first watched this in my German class in high school. I was expecting a 90 minute boring documentary. Man, was I ever wrong. It starts off as Adolf as a child. For about the first 10 minutes or so, it shows how his childhood was like all the way until he wanted to become an artist. The music that was playing through these scenes just sends chills down your spine. From this point on, the movie does exactly what the title is, how he came into to power. Robert Carlyle played Hitler perfectly because anytime he got up to speak, everyone that heard him was easily persuaded by anything he said. At times, I felt like I was watched Hitler in real life. That's how good the acting was. Throughout the movie, people started to see what Hitler was after and tried to stop him. But no matter what they did or how hard they tried, he just kept getting stronger.
So, the bottom-line, this is one of the best history movies you can see. It's very educational, but most of the time you wouldn't realize it because it's so good. I'd definitely check it out. It's well worth the $11.

Movie Review: WISH WE COULD HAVE SEEN THE WAR...
Summary: 5 Stars

I didn't know what i was gonna think when i watched this. I am a HUGE buff when it comes to WW2. How it started and all that. But this dvd set was a very interseting view on the man we've come to view as the face of evil. He had a lot of his past erased so there's not much history for them to go on but i did love Robert Caryle's version of Hitler. Although i don't believe he was that crazy at least on the outward. I wish the had went into how he was during the war but then it would have been way to long. All in all it's a good movie just for the sets themselves. But the 2nd dvd is the real treat with an inside look at all the problems they had making the film and why they did some of the things they did...and then the bonus of the 120+ min. Doc. Called Hitler:A Carrer...thats why it get's so many stars for me. That alone makes it worth the buy.

Movie Review: An outstanding presentation with a few historical flaws
Summary: 5 Stars

I stayed up until 4 am last night watching this DVD. All in all I was very impressed. The young Hitler is spot on although the older Hitler could have used a bit more makeup and fleshing out. The character of Rohm was out of place. He wasn't a giant who dwarfed Hitler. In fact, he was a bit pauchy and Hitler's height. And where was Himmler ... nowhere that I could see, yet he played a critical role in Hitler's attempted revolt and subsequent establishment of the SS. I don't think that Hitler said "let's meet at Bad Wiessee" to Rohm prior to the "Night of the Long Knives", as presented in the movie. Other characters weren't bad but again, the characterization of Hitler was outstanding. All in all I give it 5 stars for keeping me entertained for 3 hours.
