Movie Review: Highlander Reaches High Ground!!!

We've been highly anticipating this new ground-breaking film in the Highlander series for months now - and the wait was well worth it!
Whether you like or dislike animation, and are a fan of the Highlander franchise or not - you are bound to like or love this beautifully, well-crafted animated feature film by the terrific people at Madhouse.
And for those animae afficinadoes, (especially those old-school underground ones like us!), then you will notice that this new Highlander film is the best animae in years!
I would pay double to triple the price I did for another one of these types of classy, awesome animated films. Yes, there are hopes for a series if this does well. And how can it not? It is better than all of the live action Highlander films rolled into one! (Dig that Sean Connery, though.)
This is such a well-rounded, wonderfully put together film in all ways. This is what happens when true professionals grasp an idea - and form a true bond where Eastern influences meets Western influences - and create truly one of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy epics of all time.
This new Highlander film comes alive in stunning fashion by the legendary animae director Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who has truly outdone himself here since he has done the Ninja Scroll movie back in the day. Wicked City was another one of those films that was ground breaking in animation, being more geared for true fans of hardcore cartoons that are meant not for kids - but for adult audiences only. I miss that. Animae has become too mainsteam and geared for the kiddies. Thank God Highlander decided against that!
In this masterfully-crafted film, the American and Eastern teams who made this film does a splendid job of re-imaging the entire Highlander franchise by showing viewing audiences just how Colin MaCloud becomes the immortal we all know and love. It also shows an original new tale, one in which we watch Colin go through various timelines following the trail of his immortal arch-enemy, the uber-cool Marcus Octavius, who slayed his lover Moya on the Celtic plains many centuries ago.
The awesome way that MADHOUSE animators show viewing audiences the different way in which the writers and director decided to jump throughout differing time periods is testament to superlative animated filmaking. This is the way it oughta be! From WWII to Roman mediveal times to fuedal Japan - all is shown in masterfully and colorful ways.
All aspects of this film are top-notch, from the music score to the voice overs to the colors and animation. There are some other very interesting tidbits shown in the Bonus Extras. Scenes that were cut out, but we wished they had not been. They are terrific. And in an interview with the director, he tells us that he hopes for a sequel, just that he hopes he is given more time to make it more spectacular.
We agree! A sequel of this caliber, and better, would be more than welcome. So embrace this latest and greatest of adventures. It has it all! Action. Adventure. Time-spanning Romance. Science Fiction. Fantasy. All in blazing color and fantastically animated.
