Movie Reviews of High Spirits

Movie Review: Meant to be a ghost story, but tried to be a romantic comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't get me wrong - the movie is still great. But it would have been better for me if they had cast somebody other than Steve Guttenberg in a leading role - Steve Guttenberg will forever be the goofy nutcake in Police Academy just like Jack Palance shouldn't try to be a smooth talking ladies man at a disco club. Daryl Hannah was great in Splash with Tom Hanks, but I would rather have seen whoever did the casting put Gwyneth Paltrow or Kirsten Dunst in Daryl Hannah's spot, and David Spade or Andrew McCarthy in the spot mistakenly given to Steve Guttenberg. Guttenberg just doesn't help this movie. Of course if they could have cast Eva Longoria or Teri Hatcher in Daryl Hannah's spot and then cast Tom Hanks or Orlando Bloom in the role opposite them, well you could have made millions. I bought this DVD because Peter O'Toole is versatile enough to be convincing, and because I liked the trailers showing the antiquated Irish castle used to make this film. I have heard and read that Daryl Hannah took a lot of bad hits for this movie and I would like to say I adored her in this film - in my opinion it was Steve Guttenberg that should have been ashamed. Even Liam Neeson in the role of a villain ghost was a better fit than Steve Guttenberg. Anyway there is a sequel in the works (coming out 2011?) and I for one intend to check it out too, just like I dared to undertake the adventure of seeing this 1988 movie said to be a flop - but I enjoyed it. 'High Spirits' turned out to be worth having for me even if damn few other folks felt that way. I say buy this DVD, you will be entertained and the movie is actually pretty well done even if Steve Guttenberg did try to ruin it.

Movie Review: Still Delightful After All These Years
Summary: 5 Stars

High Spirits is the kind of movie that the whole family can enjoy. Although the title would indicate that this may be a ghost story, there is nothing to fear. The ghost sequences are only the slightest bit "creepy" and soon lose all their edge when we meet the ghosts themselves. (Liam Neeson and Daryl Hannah) Most folks would probably not mind being haunted by one of these two!

This movie has two BIG things going for it. Number one is the cast, all of whom just shine. Big names of Guttenberg, Hannah, Neeson, D'angelo and most notably O'toole can almost guarantee a good time. Peter O'toole, as always, is especially endearing.

The other thing this movie has is pure charm. Its a good old fashioned almost disneyesque kind of film. Its a love story with enough fun in it to keep everybody entertained. Its MAIN charm comes from the setting. A quaint old "haunted" Irish castle where the servants have a beautiful old fashioned brogue. I found myself wishing I was there on several ocassions. Some will say it is insipid and has no social value. This is true. Its just good old fashioned movie fun. Sit back, kick off your shoes and enjoy. :)

Movie Review: Delightful, even after all these years!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie many, many, moons ago, and found out that my Mom had never seen. Well, I made sure that this was one of her stocking stuffers for Christmas.

We watched it the other night, and she said she couldn't believe she had not seen it before and that anyone who is looking for a fun, laugh filled evening needs to see it. As for me, well, I never tire of it.

We can sympathize with some (Peter O'Toole and Steve Guttenberg), love to hate others (Beverly D'Angelo) and just shake our heads laughing at others (Jennifer Tilly and Peter Gallagher), look at some and say, I know someone like that (Liam Neeson).

And of course it has one of my favorite actors, Donal McCann. This was the first movie I ever saw him in, and can picture no one else playing his character and being believable! Who else could pull off driving the bus, having a 'banshee' fall on top of it and never miss a beat when telling the tales of the haunted Castle Pluckett?!

If you are looking for something like Thirteen Ghosts, move right along - this is a delightful and funny haunting! :)

Movie Review: My favorite movie of all time.
Summary: 5 Stars

It really is! I think everyone has that one movie they never tire of watching whether it's an Oscar winner or not and this is mine. When life gets me down I can pop this DVD in and get lost in this wonderful haunted castle. No other movie I've found has so much "castle" ambiance. I love the large cast as well, only wish more time was spent portaying the wacky Irish staff. Watching it for the first time on my 60" widescreen was a double delight in that all the background detail unnoticed on a smaller set becomes evident, adding new dimension to the film. I even plan on visiting Castle Dromore someday which is the castle this movie was set in. It really is a shame that Neil Jordan's career began a downward spiral after this movie was released with such terrible reviews. Gutenberg and Hannah were probably the real reasons for the bad reviews, not the direction. Luckily he made a comeback years later with another favorite of mine, Interview with a Vampire. Any fan of castles or 80's comedy will really enjoy this one.

Movie Review: Indescribably funny
Summary: 5 Stars

To save his castle from becoming an attraction in Malibu, Peter Plunkett (Peter O'Toole) came up with a scheme to turn the castle into castle most haunted in the area. Unknown to him is that the castle is haunted and visitors are really really really going to find out just how haunted it is. And if that is not enough Martin Brogan (Liam Neeson) had warts, his feet stank, and he squished.

Be sure to purchase the MGM DVD and not the poor quality Video Treasures VHS
