Movie Reviews of High Plains DrifterMovie Review: A Classic To Say The Least Summary: 5 Stars
Only Clint Eastwood could play a character who drifts in to a small western town, order the towns people to paint everything red, and then rename the town "Hell". Eastwood plays a mysterious drifter in this film, who is followed by a very chilling tune throughout the movie. With some townspeople at his side, and others wishing him dead, the town comes to him for aid due to the coming release of three criminals the townspeople put in jail. With the criminals released, it's evident they'll come back into the small town of Lago looking for revenge, but as it turn out Clint has some avenging to do himself. Great film that gives off an extremely powerful feel of mystery and suspense, a definite must see!
Movie Review: My Favorite Western of All Time Summary: 5 Stars
Classic Clint Eastwood Western but without all the bad production values of some of his other westerns. Beautiful cinematography, believable dialogue and engaging characters at every turn. The eerie feeling of this movie is truly understated. Especially during the final gunbattle. By the end of the movie you may have figured it out, but watch to the absolute very end to be sure. One character nearly reprised his role and appearance in "Blazing Saddles" (you might remember him from the 'Magnum P.I.' TV show). See at least 5 of the cast members of this movie appear in the subsequent, offbeat Clint Eastwood comedy "Every Which Way But Loose". Superb filmmaking.
Movie Review: 5 stars for the movie, one star for the DVD. Summary: 5 Stars
Letterboxed AND Pillarboxed!
I'm not reviewing this great flick, just warning about the DVD that was released in 98'.
If you want to watch anything other than a tiny shrunken down picture, you'll have to
stretch the image which of course distorts the picture making it virtually unwatchable.
Most of Eastwood's movies have gotten excellent DVD treatment like Kelly's Heroes and
Every Which Way But Loose, but this one missed the boat. Again, do not buy the 98'
release, I'm not the only one complaining about this and there is no other setting and
its single sided only. Clint, you need to kick somebody's butt over this!
Movie Review: "i never got your name." "i never gave it" Summary: 5 Stars
with those lines "stranger" settles the name game quickly. this is clint's second movie as director and his first try at a western. once again he shows he is equal to the task.
a stranger rides out of the desert into the town of lago and in less than 5 mins. is attacked and kills 3 men.after that the townspeople ask him to protect them from outlaws getting out of jail and coming to the town for revenge.how he protects the town and who he is (or was) makes for a very sharp western myth at its best.
no real extras(trailer and production notes), but film looks good, clear good sound, and even gives you both widescreen and pan and scan! very good disc
Movie Review: Nearing an End of an Era Summary: 5 Stars
The outstanding outdoor scenery of this somewhat esoteric Western makes its plot more unnerving and beguiling than the ordinary Western. Besides the scenery there is Clint Eastwood as a mysterious, enigmatic and very ominous stranger who comes to lend his expertise to the common townsfolk against returning outlaws. The results are of the fantastic and the true nature of Eastwood's motivations are slowly unveiled. Yet the true nature of Eastwood's character remains a point of speculation. This is a riveting film. As the classic Western cinematic genre neared its end this film echoed and resonated the grief and pain felt at the death of this genre.
