Movie Reviews of Hero at LargeMovie Review: Real Heroes Are Just Ordinary People Summary: 4 Stars
Released in 1980, HERO AT LARGE stars John Ritter portraying Steve Nichols, an aspiring actor trying to break into the big time in New York City. Steve is hired by a publicity firm to dress up as Captain Avenger at a cinema to promote the release of the film and build the hype. He's one of many different actors hired to do the same thing at several locations. While visiting a small grocery store on his way home after one of his Avenger gigs, he foils an attempted robbery. Steve's a real nice guy and though is glad he could help, doesn't think much about what he did. However, the media eats the story up and the public is soon clamoring to know who the secret identity of this real life Captain Avenger is. Thrilled at the prospect of being able to use his acting abilities to really help people, Steve goes out as Captain Avenger again to stop another big crime. Eventually, the publicity firm is able to uncover Steve's identity and want to use him in a stunt to further publicize the Captain Avenger movie. It's a conflict of conscience as Steve has to decide whether to cash in and give his career a boost or follow his morals.
HERO AT LARGE was released in the middle of Ritter's run on THREE'S COMPANY and the movie was really the first feature film starring Ritter as the lead role. The movie was a perfect fit for Ritter and allowed him to display his range as a dramatic actor. The film is rather cheery and upbeat, but doesn't stray away from struggles and sadness that we are all familiar with. For instance, Steve feels great joy when he finally thinks he's won the girl he's been wooing, J. Marsh (portrayed by the lovely Anne Archer). However, his joy suddenly evaporates when he realizes that J. doesn't completely share his feelings and leaves to spend time with her boyfriend.
Yet, Steve doesn't give up or let his disappointment or failures keep him down for long. Like good old Charlie Brown, he just gets back up and begins again.
The movie has very little foul language and no nudity. It has some great messages and is a great movie that everyone can watch together as a family. Also, though it's a bit cheesy, the speech that Steve delivers at his public appearance is a great one to listen to.
The only real extra on the DVD is the trailer for HERO AT LARGE.
Movie Review: An underdog film Summary: 4 Stars
I was but a wee lad of 9 years old when I saw this film at the theater. Even then, it captivated my attention and I understood the "message" of the movie. The message was that real superheroes are people that you meet and see in the streets every day; not just some muscle-bound person in a flashy costume. True heroes are ordinary people.
This is a glorious film with a feel-good, no...feel-great ending. John Ritter is supendous as a struggling actor who is suddenly thrust into greatness. The only problem is, the powers that be try to capitalize on this greatness and Ritter soon finds out that being a hero is not all it's cracked up to be.
This film is funny, charming, exciting, sad and heartwarming. Why are such beautiful gems of movie-making like this so often overlooked or forgotten?
Rent or buy this film! You will not be disappointed. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was that toward the last quarter of the film, the pace gets pretty slow, but the climax of the movie more than makes up for it. This is a movie the whole family can enjoy (just a few "minor" cuss-words).
"Who says 'nice guys finish last'?"
Movie Review: There's a hero in all of us... Summary: 4 Stars
If you're like me and grew up watching the TV show "Three's Company" and laughed at the zanny, slap-stick comedy of Jack Tripper played by John Ritter, then you will definitely enjoy "Hero at Large". This movie is more than just a comedy. It is packed with action, courage and the will to prove that there is a Hero in all of us. As far as I'm concerned it takes a special actor... one who is versitile enough to bring it all together. You will see why John Ritter was chosen for this role. He will win your heart as he struggles to win the heart of a woman and the love that saves him in the end. Your children may have a new Hero as well. His name is... "Captain Avenger"
Movie Review: Hokey Hero scores Large Summary: 4 Stars
Alright, I admit, it is a hokey movie and the dialog is stilted. It was made for tv ...so what do you want? John Ritter is delightfully sappy as the hopefull Hero who believes that good always triumphs over evil.Anne Archer is enticing as the neighbor not even the good guy can resist. The movie revels in its simplicity but manages some scenes that are close to movie classics. There is even a scene that no matter how many times I see it still makes me tear up, and as a 55 year old male the only thing that brings me to tears these days is politics. Its fun, start the popcorn and order it.
Movie Review: A Good Movie--Fun! Summary: 4 Stars
As usual John Ritter is a bumbling guy who gets mistaken for the character he portrays instead of who he really is,at a very bad time! How does he get out of this mess? A good date movie. Fun! And John Ritter is so funny to watch.
