Movie Reviews of Henry & June

Movie Review: HENRY MILLER ACCORDING TO ANAIS NIN
Summary: 5 Stars

At least two movies of Philip Kaufman will stay in movie history, THE RIGHT STUFF and HENRY & JUNE. Produced by Philip Kaufman's son, co-written with his wife Rose Kaufman, HENRY & JUNE is a family affair. One could say that it is a european movie filmed in an american manner. Don't get me wrong, it's a compliment !

Fred Ward as Henry Miller, portuguese actress Maria de Medeiros as Anais Nin and Uma Thurman as the woman inspiring the two writers, Richard E. Grant and Kevin Spacey in smaller parts, the whole cast gives a superb performance. Don't expect pornographic scenes in HENRY & JUNE, sex is more suggested than showed. Philip Kaufman is interested in the relation between Henry and Anais and doesn't follow Henry Miller in his multiple adventures in Paris' brothels.

Henry Miller lives in a Paris that Federico Fellini could have created : enjoy this carnaval full of fellinian faces or Henry Miller's neighbors (you can recognize among them french clown Pierre Etaix in one of his last performances). Philip Kaufman has recreated the Paris which was the center of such movies as Marcel Carné's LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS or LE JOUR SE LEVE. Poetic realism was the name of this french movement of the 1935-1945 period.

Average extra-features but over the top audio and video transfers.

Movie Review: Idiots!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just got done reading a review for this that wrote that Anais Nin was spoilt and immature and lacked feelings. All she ever did was give!! I love Henry Miller's writing to death but any self-repsecting artist will tell you that Henry lacked emotion and had an insatiable lust for whores. Henry was a wonderfull author, yes, but the reason why his writing so wonderfull was because he gave the part of his "self" that he could not act out in reality to his work. Because henry was a man of pieces. The little emotion and love and happiness he did have was reserved for the books he wrote and the ones closest to him. The reason why this movie is told from Anais Nin's point of view is because she's the one who gave personal insight into Henry and June through her journals in the first place... Don't listen to the idiot who wrote the last review about how Henry had passion and emotion. They don't understand art and obviously know nothing of Anais Nin because of they didn't know why the movie was from her perspective. This movie is more or less correct but what I wrote above is just a rant about what really happened. That damned person who wrote that review probablly only read Henry Miller and Anais Nin in college where they made him/her read it and he/she probablly didn't undertsand half of it.

Movie Review: Sensual, Gritty, Erotic--Women AND Men...A MUST SEE!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This "period" movie has got intrigue, eroticism, a sensual pace, a great (true) story, and hypnotic visuals--it is an aphrodisiac on film. The actors are superbly engaging, whether the feminine and subtle is your cup of tea, or the masculine and gritty is your double-shot of scotch. It's really an exquisite film, and if it's of any interest, it gets women so heated-up and turned-on that discussion of the film's point will invariably have to take place AFTER the wild lovemaking session that WILL follow! It's also may be of interest to lovers of "Pulp Fiction" that this is almost CERTAINLY where Quentin Tarantino discovered that he wanted to use both Uma Thurman and Maria de Madeiros in Pulp Fiction, because they were both in "Henry and June"--Uma's performance was a true transformation--I respect her as an actress more because of her performance here.

Movie Review: Incredibly sensual, erotic without being excessively explici
Summary: 5 Stars

This film deals with Anais Nin and her exploration of sexuality while living in France around 1930. We are much too jaded. Doing things that were forbidden adds a spice that we can no longer taste. For Anais, sex was an adventure. For us, it's something late-night comics make clumsy jokes about. What a shame! This film works for the same reason that wearing layers of clothes that you can slowly, sensually remove is a lot sexier than bland nudity. If this film is any indication, sex was a lot better before the sexual revolution. The relationships between her and Henry Miller and, of course, June were as screwed-up as ours, but somehow seemed a lot more interesting.

Movie Review: Splendid Work of Art
Summary: 5 Stars

Henry and June is the tale of colleagues who become lovers, yet remained married to others. This movie is sensual, sensational, stimulating, sexy, smart. It tells a story about how passion can overcome those who work together and admire their minds as well as their bodies. Aspects of infidelity as being not such a horrible sin, of love between women as natural, and of jealousy are treated realistically. There are plots and subplots intertwined. The characters are well developed. Also, the filmography is unusual and beautiful
