Movie Review: Another great British miniseries!!

I saw this a couple of years ago on tv. It was very good. The acting is great. I was excited when I came across it on Amazon's website. I bought it immediately.

I received this movie in the "A&E Romance Collection: Special Edition" I recently purchased. I loved many of the movies in the collection except Tom Jones didn't seem to compare or fit in terms of quality in comparison to the rest of the movies in the collection. I had an expectation (or I at least was hopeful) that if I liked Pride and Prejudice, I must like the rest of the films A&E bundled in this romance collection too. This just wasn't so.

I'm a big fan of romantic period films (i.e. Pride and Prejudice) and I just didn't feel the romance in this movie; at least a genuine romance or true love at all. I just couldn't look past how unfaithful Tom was to his "true love" and why on earth she loved a man with such poor morals and values, and such little respect for women at all! Where was the trust in this relationship at all? Where was his dedication to her other than his mission to constantly pursue her, but with no honor or respect? I understand this film was trying to portray how he was pretty much a prodigal son living the rebellious life, hits rock bottom, finds out his true identity, then he proceeds to go on and try to redeem himself in life. Even after all that, I just didn't feel any sympathy or redemption at all. I didn't feel any pure love in this film which in turn didn't make me feel any love for the characters or film at all.

I have never read the book Tom Jones before, but the Henry Fielding's Tom Jones movie certainly didn't spark my interest in wanting to read the book. Maybe it has to do with the fact it really isn't my style of book in the first place, since I have a hard time with all the immorality, infidelity, and pointless sex scenes that contained no feelings of love at all. On top of all that, the movie was EXTREMELY long and boring at times. I felt no motivation or desire to see what was going to happen next. After watching the first half of the movie, I actually went a good span without having any desire or interest at all in watching the second half. Months went by and I realized I had completely forgotten about the movie; so I decided to give the movie another chance and force myself to watch the rest. Besides, I had already bought the movie collection. After all the chances, I'm still not impressed. I know I'll never watch this film again and would never recommend it to anyone.

I also wasn't impressed with the quality of acting, which seemed very silly and amateur. I have an appreciation for comedies, but I just didn't find the sense of humor in Tom Jones funny at all. It was as if they were trying TOO hard to be funny and it ended up looking ridiculous and stupid most of the time. Maybe this kind of story and type of movie is for some people, but it isn't for someone like me. If you are looking for a good clean romantic period film with good morals and true love, this is NOT the film for you. If you enjoy trashy films, immorality, infidelity, silliness, and poor acting in a really long film - this is definitely for you!

I was more than incredibly disappointed with this film. Disgusted is a better word for to describe my feelings. While illegitimate children, love affairs and intimacy can be shown and talked of in a tasteful manner - this film did it most untastefully. It was full of explicit language and sexual content not to mention nudity and baseness. If it were given a formal rating according to the current ratings, it would definately be 'R'. It is a far cry from, "Pride and Prejudice", "Wives and Daughters" and "North and South". I totally agree with the reviewer that said this movie is " a morally deprived movie and repulsive to people of high moral standard", and I echo , "Shame on you A&E"!!!!

Disgusting movie that leaves nothing to the imagination. Sex scene after sex scene is all through this movie. It is degrading and gross. The only good thing about this movie was Tom's attidude outside of the bedroom. I can't recommend this movie to anyone.
