Movie Reviews of Helvetica

Movie Review: Helvetica
Summary: 5 Stars

I would suggest to every graphic designer and student that if you think every "cool" thing that has ever been made comes from just a computer, consider your area's roots and PAY ATTENTION to these well known, admired and idolized sources of design. The documentary clearly explains, with passion, the history of one of our most commonly used though overlooked and underestimated type studies ever used as well as provide sound opinion to what makes them more (or less) effective than others. I could only hope that the directors and producers of this film are encouraged enough to continue providing entertaining and extremely informative studies in this area. Definitely own this movie!!!!!

Movie Review: A Typophile's Treasure-trove!
Summary: 5 Stars

My first viewing was an early snippet when Gary presented it at the TypeCon typography conference over a year ago. He then showed the final product at TypeCon the following year to cheering crowds of type aficionados and answered questions afterwards. It is loaded with great interviews with the likes of Matthew Carter, Massimo Vignelli, and Erik Spiekermann. You'll laugh, you will cry! You will ask for more. The DVD has extra clips not seen in theaters. It is hard to imagine a starring role by a typeface, but the ubiquitous Helvetica may start a new Academy Award category, "Best Performance by a Typeface in a Leading Role".

Movie Review: Why not Helvetica?
Summary: 5 Stars

Weather you use the font or not, love the font or hate it, you will learn to appreciate modern typography more by watching "Helvetica". I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary and shared it with my graphic design students, many of whom bought their own copies. Typographic liberties taken in the film do not lessen the impact of a funny, quirky, fast paced look at the major tool of graphic designers-type. Great way to introduce students to contemporary designers and their thoughts about typography. Can't wait for Objectified!!!

Movie Review: A controversial typeface, a brilliant film
Summary: 5 Stars

I first heard about this film on NPR and was thrilled to see it through Netflix. If you're interested in the history of typography, the psychology of typefaces, or just want to see a great film, rent or buy this. It's almost hard to believe how inundated with helvetica we all are (look around the block or this web site) and just how typographers and graphic designers react to it. It gives us all license to either like it or throw our hands up in rage and demand more typeface emotions in our life.

Movie Review: Must See if You Enjoy Documentaries
Summary: 5 Stars

I had not heard of this movie when my husband rented it and when he said we were going to watch "Helvetica" I was like: "You mean the font?"

This was one of the better films I've seen lately. I am not a graphic designer or in the arts so this was all new information to me and it was surprisingly fascinating. I have a new appreciation towards typeface and signs, particularly store front. Plus, the people interviewed in the film totally crack me up, needless to say they are passionate about fonts.
