Movie Reviews of HellfightersMovie Review: A Personal Perspective of Hellfighters Summary: 5 Stars
As others have mentioned, I originally saw this film when it was released on the "big screen". It left a huge impression on me that has not left me to this day. When I saw that Hellfighters was available on DVD, I couldn't wait to order it so that I could enjoy the film at my leisure.
Perhaps this film did not have an Oscar level script and, yes, it is a bit dated (it was released in 1968 for goodness sake). However, this film is not a remake of a previously released movie (as so many others are today), nor is it a rehash of an occupation that is over done to death (how many films have been released documenting the fantastic work of Red Adair, who was truly "one of a kind"?). Throw in a stellar cast, and you have a film that is one of my favorite John Wayne movies of all times.
The Duke had a talent that allowed him to transcend the western and war film genres, allowing him, and those who worked with him on this and so many other films, to make successful films in various situations or scenarios. It is his honesty and obvious believability that comes across in this film and takes the audience from what could have been perceived as hokey, to the dangerous reality of the film.
I highly recommend this film; let it take you into the lives of the people whose lives are put on the line every day to fight oil fires and see the impact their work has on those who love them.
Movie Review: My husband's all time favorite movie! Summary: 5 Stars
One of John Wayne's greatest movies, and one of his few non-Westerns, although it does take place in Texas. John Wayne portrays Chance Buckman, the owner of an oil well fire-fighting company. His job takes him and his fellow workers around the globe, but the dangers of the job caused his marriage to fail. Following an injury, his associate (played by the late Jim Hutton, father of actor Tim Hutton) brings his estranged daughter (Katherine Ross) to the hospital, but when his daughter marries this associate, Chance must acknowledge her fears, deal with his ex-wife, and face the fact that his protectiveness of his new son-in-law has changed their relationship. Based on a true story, the real life "Red" Buckman and his oil well fire fighting company were responsible for putting out many of the oil well fires in Kuwait following Desert Storm.
Movie Review: Hellfighters Summary: 5 Stars
Originally saw Hellfighters at the theater when it first came out. Watched it again on VHS tape in 1988. Just purchased the DVD. I very much enjoyed the HELLFIGHTERS and plan to watch it at least once or twice a year in the future.
I consider myself a John Wayne fam from the word "Go," so I may not be the most objective person about any of the Duke's movies. Suffice it to say, I own approximately 50 John Wayne movies in VHS or DVD format (some in both). I've never yet seen the John Wayne film I didn't enjoy.
Do I recommend The Hellfighters? Absolutely---even to non-John Wayne fans. It's a good movie. Despite what the Duke's many (mostly liberal) critics have said over the years, the man certainly could act.

Movie Review: Highly Recommend...hang on to the edge of your seat! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a big John Wayne fan but I've never watched too many of the non-Western variety (although "Hatari!" is one of my absolute favorites). I've liked Katharine Ross since the first time I watched "The Stepford Wives" and like John Wayne, have enjoyed her in everything I've seen her act in. I watched "Hellfighters" a few weeks back and fell in love with it. It's now become one of my favorite John Wayne films.
I won't go into detail about the plot because I think that if you haven't had the chance to see the movie yet, it's better when it's a surprise start to finish as it was for me. Suffice it to say that this is a great movie based on real life oil well fire-fighter Red Adair. "Hellfighters" has a bit of everything and most of all of course, The Duke....need I say more?
Movie Review: Another John Wayne Classic Summary: 5 Stars
When I saw this movie, I couldn't picture John Wayne in anything but a war or western film. However, this was another John Wayne classic movies that he made over his great career. John Wayne plays the role of Chance Buckman who the owner of his own company. Vera Miles plays the role of his ex wife Madelyn Buckman. Katherine Ross plays the role of his daughter Tish Buckman and the finally piece to this puzzle is Jim Hutton who plays the role of Greg Parker. Chance does the impossible, as he owns a company that puts out oil fires. That's why he's divorce because Madelyn couldn't cope with what he did for a living. Enters his daughter who gets involved with Chance's right had man Greg Parker. This movie will keep you on the edge of your sit from beginning to end, as the action is non-stop.
