Movie Reviews of Heima

Movie Review: Gorgeous land- and sound-scapes
Summary: 5 Stars

I know next to nothing about the Icelandic band Sigur Ros -- even how to pronounce their name. But thanks to my son, I have had a chance to watch an extraordinary musical and visual experience. The DVD shows the band playing its other-wordly tunes in out-of-the-way Icelandic locales. The music is played on a weird combination of rock instruments -- bowed guitars, bass, drums and keyboard -- along with strings, marching band instruments and the weirdest vocals this side of Nepalese throat singers. The music is gorgeous, evocative, soulful and rhythmic. The best way to describe it is George Winston meets Pink Floyd.

While the band plays, we see see shots of the crowd -- a melange of all ages and styles -- from toddlers to elders -- all grooving on the awesome sounds. We also see shots and still-lifes of the achingly-beautiful Icelandic summer landscape -- a boulder, a tuft of grass, a running stream.

Sigur Ros may not be your cup of tea, but it is a beautiful memento of a phenomenal group that is oh so different from the pre-packaged glop that makes billions this side of Vestmannaeyjar. Very much worth a long look and listen!

Movie Review: I don't understand the pricing...
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD set is incredible!
What I don't understand is the lack of availability and the Market Place prices of $99.
I just picked it up new at Amoeba Records in San Francisco for $16.98 (regular price: $18.98).
Did Amazon lose distribution rights or something? I LOVE Amazon, and was tempted to pay $99, but I'm glad I found it for less.

And Amazon? Please don't pull this. I send people to you all the time and I'm a long time addicted customer. It doesn't hurt to send people elsewhere. Remember 'Miracle on 34th Street'?

Movie Review: Really paints a picture of a people...
Summary: 5 Stars

I just saw this film today and was completely awe inspired. I really felt an attachment to the music and the rich visuals accompany the said music perfectly. I'm a HUGE Sigur Ros fan and I've always felt that their music is music that you can touch. You can pick it up and put it in your pocket. It's very nostalgic and with the equally as stunning Icelandic scenery, the music becomes positively epic.

After watching this I felt like I had a very solid understanding of the kind of place that Iceland is. I felt very connected to it and this film certainly brings that flavor, culture and attitudes of the people into your home, as well as some fantastic music! Sigur Ros is one of the only bands whose music I would recommend buying blindly. I would honestly tell someone who has never heard of them to go out and but an album of theirs simply because it is so poignant and soul felt.

Highly recommended, especially for Planet Earth and Koyaanisqatsi fans, simply because of the GORGEOUS footage of Iceland.

A++++

Movie Review: Heima - Sigur Ros
Summary: 5 Stars

Gorgeous visuals mixed with the heavenly sound of Sigur Ros music makes this DVD any Sigur Ros fans dream.

Movie Review: Superbly made music doc and concert footage
Summary: 5 Stars

Beautifully filmed and expertly edited, this is one of the best music documentary/tour films I've seen. It delivers great performances in wonderful settings, and was made with clear affection towards the land and the people of Iceland.

The 2nd disk is a great bonus that may well end up getting more play than the main disk, as it presents all of the performances uninterrupted by snippets of interview, as they are in the main documentary, as well as some additional material that didn't make the main film.
