Movie Reviews of Heavy Metal (Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: SUPERBIT VERSION of HEAVY METAL IS NO-FRILLS
Summary: 4 Stars

HEAVY METAL is not a great film, nor a bad one, it's more like an old hippie friend who lives down the street; some days you couldn't care less, but there are times when you need to be in that "aura." I wouldn't call myself a fan, but saw it opening weekend when it was released, I have had it in three formats, and probably watched in 30 times or so. Each time I find something new.

I bought the Superbit version, and while I don't have a HD or plasma screen to notice any major difference in the picture quality, the sound is amazing; it's loud and CLEAR, with a really nice EQ job (and I am using Dolby surround, not DTS). The down side is that there are NO extras, aside from subtitles. I especially miss that pen drawn outtake that was on the videotape and laserdisc version (this is the first DVD of HEAVY METAL that I have owned). If all you care about is the movie, the Superbit is a great presentation, for all the extras, look for different versions.

Movie Review: Cult Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Gerald Potterton's "Heavy Metal" is definitely one of the best animation movies ever made. It has everything: violence, sex, nudity, humor, and intelligent story. Great soundtrack by such hard rock/heavy metal groups like Black Sabbath, Nazareth, Devo, and more. My favorite segment from "Heavy Metal" is "B-17"-this one is dark, bloody, and creepy.

Movie Review: 'Heavy Metal' (Columbia/Tristar) Running time:90 minutes
Summary: 5 Stars

Review no.101.Reportedly,one of Columbia's most popular DVD titles.I have NO problem believing that.A great film based on the magazine of the same name.Even though I've bought very few issues of the 'Heavy Metal' publication,I absolutely loved the movie.Remember seeing this flick several times in the theater when it first came out in 1981.I mean, there for a few years when they STILL had midnight showings for $2 a ticket, who could resist?Fantastic adult animation here!So much imagination went into the making of this motion picture.I've heard some movie-goers mention they hate cartoon boobs. There's much more in 'Heavy Metal',like mutated aliens, futuristic spaceships with clueless cocaine-sortin' pilots, giant sized flies giving rides to two passengers and galactic gremlins.Plus, the good soundtrack makes this DVD a must-have.Highly recommended.

Movie Review: The Best Movie of the '80s and the Best Animated Movie Ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

One bright and sunny day Heavy Metal came to a local theater for a brief period of time, and on a Friday, my girlfriend and myself went to see the movie. Being midday, we had the theater all to ourselves. Eating bagel dogs we watched the show and had a really great time watching that flick; a brilliant movie that's a superb collaboration of sensuous visual imagery and great rock music. Well, the girl is gone but now Heavy Metal is out on DVD and I relish the chance to see it again along with the things I didn't see in the theaters when it first came out.

Movie Review: Par Excellance
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this animated classic when I was in my late teens and had just started college. I remember watching "Wizards" at the free theater on campus the same year. It was a great time for an emergence of sci fi, fantasy and adult focused animation. I bought "Heavy Metal" magazine for years, wore out the soundtrack on cassette and vinyl (double album!)

The story that binds the vignettes together is what keeps you focused through the movie... but each segment, done by different artists, is as wonderful and unique as the last. We all have our favorites, from Harry Canyon and Denn to Captain Sternn and Gremlins (I actually remembered this story from an old issue of "Creepy" many moons previous). I remember identifying with Taarna. What a kick butt female role model!

I see negative reviews from people who should know better, but I suspect many of them are seduced by the modern animation that is readily available now, and perhaps their taste runs more towards the less hopeful tone of modern anime. There is no comparison in my mind. The people at "Heavy Metal" (Metal Hurlant) had full on vision here. This is what the manga to anime folks are doing now.
